I have been on the lookout for a Vogue as the new family wagon but got to drive the RRS the other day, I must say I was quite impressed. Added to this I have been offered some better deals on a later model TDV8 then I am giving it some serious consideration. I must say I was a sceptic of the sport due to the poor image and a quick forum search says the vogue wins hands down.

What's the consensus on here?

I too was sceptical but was persuaded by the lady of the house to buy a Sport as she was put off by the sheer size of the Vogue. I've got a V6 HSE, devoid of any bling and dark blue rather than the usual black.

It feels a bit tight on load space after our previous Disco but four up with the dog, I've only once needed to resort to the roof box. No passenger complaints at all.

Sure the TDV8 is even better but I'm hooked as an owner.

The idea of getting into a younger lower mileage car appeals, I must say the bling accessories but me off though (i.e. 22" wheels etc)and tarnish the image somewhat. My wife knows nothing about cars but when I suggested the Sport she said no way as it's a footballers car! I have brought her round before though, she will now drive an auto and rear wheel drive (although the latter never in the snow)...so once she gets up close I may be able to convince her.

Next weekend I am doing a back-to-back test of the FF and the RRS so will see what the impression is, by all accounts the MY2010 RRS is much better inside but my budget cant stretch that far.

Im looking at the same proposition as my wife's daily driver is a Range Rover Vogue SE and she wants to change that to a RRS due to its smaller size and hence practicality. But I'm not really convinced that the RRS is so much smaller when you actually drive it. Interested to hear your views.

I think you're right, it's the visual image, the Vogue just SEEMS much bigger and taller. Our RRS is on the go all the time and where I live, they seem to be used like they should be. Lots of towbars, dirt and dogs in evidence. Although it's very much personal choice (and I'm all for that!), I think a white one with black windows and 22" wheels would be drummed out of the village!

Had a TDV8 from new in 2007, and has done 89k km. It is not as big in the back as a vouge but it is still a great utility wagon smile it is great offroad and has a usefull towing capability.
On the otherside it has taken us to the south of France in comfort, crossed many Alpine passes and is not out of place at a French Chateau. Fuel consumption depends on how heavy your right foot is, worst I've had is 17mpg towing a 4 tonne trailer around town and regularly get better than 30mpg at 120km/h on the motorway and being really carefull how I drive I have got upto 38mpg out of the car.

The Sport is a sexy product, biggish on the outside, quite snug inside sitting in the 'cockpit'. Rearseats comfy, but not loads of legroom (got more in my FL2). The boot is also compromised due to the roofline. But it's supposed to be this way, otherwise go for a D4. The RR on the other hand is very roomy inside, I believe the latest models have a better setup and now corner beautifully.

IMHO, if you yearn for a sports car, but need the practicality of a 4x4/ Estate, then the RRS fits the bill perfectly. LR need to put a bigger, more powerful diesel engine above the 3.0 to match those of Audi etc.

Buy a 2010MY or later, the old 2.7 is hopeless and has that 'oriole plastic dash

Funnily enough my wife has now ruled out the FF, saw one at the weekend and she said it was much bigger on the road than she imagined. We looked at an 11 plate RRS and I thought it was great but they are about 10k more than I want to spend, I think I can stretch to a TDV8 though.

Two months ago I bought a new RRS 3.0 HSE on 19" wheels through choice for ride and off road tyres, so far very pleased with it, and the driving position actually fits around you.
Yes in the back it is smaller than the FFRR but still very comfortable for long journeys, we have just driven from Ibiza up to St Malo and return with some friends and no complaints from anyone except very comfortable.
I have had FFRR's before and the last one to me felt you were a weeble wobbling around and it felt very unstable off road and rolled around on road.
Apart from that I still have my Disco which does everything both on and off road.

Look up RRSPORT.CO.UK for even more advice all very helpful.

All the very best with your choice.

I own an 11MY Range Rover 4.4TDV8 and couldn't sing its praises more. There is virtually no roll around the corners on country lanes. This used to be a problem but has been rectified by Adaptive Dynamics. The biggest letdown with the RRS is a sub-par interior (too similar to the D4 IMO) and poor engines - the 3.0 is still slow and not very 'Sport' like. Some basics for a luxury car are missing on the Sport - cooled seats etc. 4.4TDV8 in the RRS would be great but this will never happen in its current form - it doesn't fit.

Have to disagree with last post. 3.0ltr diesel engine feels lively and very smooth(RRs are not sports cars) and new interior is a lovely place to be!

Have you driven the 4.4TDV8?

The 3.0 is slow for a car which calls itself a 'Sport.' The FFRR 0-60 is 7.5s whereas the 'Sport' is 8.8s. Whilst a massive improvement on the 2.7TDV6, it's still nowhere near fast enough. Fuel economy is also average despite the lower CC. This will improve with the 8 Speed ZF gearbox for 12MY on the Sport slightly. The interior is nice, yes but the rear seats are cramped and the leather is not particularly good quality in comparison to the FFRR (semi-analine leather at least). Cooled seats are seen as a must-have now by many and why this isn't an option on the Sport I will never know.

OP: in short, if you can stretch to the new 4.4TDV8, go for the FFRR. If not, get a Sport with the 3.0 and you will still be very happy smile

i use my FFRR (4.4 V8) offroad and totally disagree with your comments ref '..very unstable off road...' - i've owned or driven most 4x4's and the FFRR is by a long shot the most 'stable/capable' car i've ever driven

and body roll on road is perfectly acceptable for such a large/high vehicle esp if you lower the air suspension (manually not the conversions)

no RR is ever meant to be driven like a porsche - its a refined driving style - certainly slowed me down even though the 4.4 V8 is certainly no slouch

thats why i question the relevance of the supercharged - good for straight line acceleration that makes you look like a knob boy racer

as for RRS v FFRR - each to their own - but i prefer the FFRR

size wise it must be mm's difference? - and the RRS weighs more

sizes of RRS and FFRR taken from Wiki - there are slight variations with each 'new' model

BUT typically

RRS

length - 4788mm
width - 1928mm
height - 1816mm

FFRR

length - 4950mm
width - 1923mm
height - 1902mm

so there is bugger all difference - the FFRR just 'looks' larger?

Yep. Wifey had an X5 and was looking at newer ones or Cayennes - persuaded her to go look at FFRRs and she objected as everyone seems to do on grounds of size. When you actually look at the measurements there's bugger all in it - it's just one was designed with a set square, and the others have some pretence to curves.
