Discovery steering wander.

just wondering if i could pick the brains of the PH Massive!
basically to cut a long story short, i bought a cheap disco earlier this year with odd wandery steering, it was very cheap so i was willing to take a gamble.
basically, it wanders all over the shop, especially at motorway speeds, i.e. 60 plus MPH it is almost uncontrolable! ive checked the steering damper and its fine, all the balls joints appear to be fine, i changed the goodyear a/ts for a spare set of Insa turbo special tracks i had lying around on different rims, i knew my 90 had driven perfectly on these. but still the discovery keeps on wandering!
so at this point i suspected the steering box, so tried to adjust a bit of play out of it this didnt help, so i changed the whole box for a known good un' and still the ruddy thing wanders!
someone has mentioned swivel pin pre-load could be the culprit but whilst being very handy with the spanners ive never atempted adjusting swivel pre-load!
i should also mention it has an oldish pro-comp 2 inch lift kit on it, but as this is showing its age i cant imagine its been causing the problem as someone would surely have swapped it out by now!
so has anyone got any ideas because its driving me insane!!! if i cant fix it im just gunna break it as the 200TDI motor and the gearbox, axles diffs etc are all excellent, its all sporting various other off-road goodies such as diff guards etc so would turn a profit on it either way, but its a good looking old lump and id much prefer to use it as a daily though the winter!

Have you checked the back axle trailing arm bushes at the chassis & axle.
you tend to get rear axle steer as the axle moves about with the worn rubber bushes.
Have you checked the universal joints in the steering coloumn ...usually theu seize and make the steering very hard but do fail and give alot of play in steering...their is one by bulkhead & on steering box input.

Check all the suspension bushes and the track rod ends in the steering.
These are the easy things to check and replace first.
The steering will feel different in corners with a 2 inch suspension lift as the castor angle has been changed as a consequence, this will reduce the steerings self-centering and give a feeling of late turn in.
You can adjust your style to cope with this, but your problem currently sounds much worse than that.

the colour is somewhat dubiously named 'Foxfire Red' and i got it from a fella in Thirsk, it spent most of its life in leeds however.as i mentioned, all the ball joints seem good, but just to be sure i shall re check! ill also have a good wiggle of the panhard rod to see if theres any play in the bush. and to reply to the gent who suggested changing/ adjusting th steering box, ive already been there!!!
so next port of call, bushes!
