My P38 (99) 4.6 HSE is failing to lock or unlock on the passenger front door when locking with the fob, but if you press the lock down from the inside of the passenger door it works the central locking perfectly (and unlocks fine as well).

So PH do you have any ideas what the problem could be I've had the door card off and everything seems to be plugged in ok.

Sounds like a tired actuator. Operating it manually is still sending a signal to the rest of the car, but it hasn't got the guts left to work by itself.

which part is the actuator, do you know what it looks like?

Take the door card off, somewhere in the locking mechanism will be a small (probably black) box. That's it.
