HELP!! Rangey 2.5 DHSE

Rangey 2.5 DHSE 2000
Advice please, driving along everything good ...suddenly loose power, look at dash, temp light off the scale, red temp light on, immediately pull over, switch off, check for leaks/steam etc, header tank full to brim. fans running. check fan belt, all ok.
left on side road awaiting tow truck!
cannot think what cause can be, only that thermostat stuck in closed position, will not start...battery very low, hope i have not cooked the engine!
Any ideas?
PS i live in rural France, not a happy bunny at the moment [need beer!]

Sounds like the water pump has self distructed! A common problem due to the impeller being made of plastic. If you can start it up with the top off the expansion tank and see if there is any flow, if no flow, water pump has self-distructed. If there is, pressure test the cooling system to see if the Head gasket has gone.
Water pump about £40 with gasket set, make sure you get the gasket set, the old one will be fubarred!
