I've read a few stories about reliability, but I am trying to work out the value of a warranty on a TDV8 Full Fat.

Difference between private versus dealer is looking around £3-4k (2007/2008 models). Buying from the dealer gets you the warranty, private generally does not but saves you cash.

Which should I go for?

I just sold a TDV8 Vogue(I'm a specialist dealer) for £23k with 69,000 miles on the clock including a 24 month warranty with £23k claim limit. Not some AA or RAC one, a proper bumper to bumper warranty that does what it says on the tin.

If I were a private punter I would maybe source one privately and get a warranty put on just so if anything should go wrong you have the knowledge that you are covered.

I have sold loads of TDV8s and not had many problems, one reoccurring issue has been the alternator (replaced 4 this year!) which is not cheap....but covered under warranty.

Thank you Bish; will give you a call as and when we want to buy (we will be adding to the family soon hence the need for a bigger car/one large enough to run over other children etc).

My 2007 TDV8 bought 12 months ago from a main dealer also required a new alternator this year. It had a new battery before that probably caused by the alternator beginning to fail. Plus a few electrical gremlins with seat heating. All (except for the battery) sorted under LR warranty. But I am not renewing this year with LR at £1400 ish.

How does the price of 'bumper to bumper' independent warranty compare to LR and who are the best suppliers?

Eh?

The LR approved warranty (up to 5 years old and 75k miles) is £1150 for the year IIRC (not got my warranty price list at home)

At £1400 someone is taking the piss.

I know someone who had a turbo go just out of waranty, it was quite a big job; engine and gear box out etc i think. it was a 2007/2008 sport V8 with about 40k ish. I think LR contributed but still cost £0000. I would certainly buy a good warranty.

Warranty on the RR is imperative IMHO, these motors can be ruinous if they go wrong without warranty cover. I would stick with the LR warranty for level of cover + convenience in claiming repairs under warranty. Am sure there are after market warranty firms that also offer very good cover if you didn't go with LR.

The pukka LR extended warranty is available to 5 years old, there after the LR 'select' warranty can be purchased. Remember you can buy warranty with or without road side cover which makes a fair difference in cost. Easiest way is to get a quote here or ring the LR warranty dept up:

https://landrover-extendedwarranty-extend-open.mot...

If your motor is out of warranty and you wish to renew then an inspection is required before reactivation of cover, your friendly LR dealer should do this for little money or FOC if the motor is in for a service.

Personally would have the warranty all the way being realistic these vehicles are not cheap to repair, our TDV8 has also had a new Alternator this year and literally this week was in for service, neededed a new Thermostat and Housing, all covered by warranty.

Bought our new from Westover Landrover and renewed the warranty last year with a 3 year deal which from memory was less than £1500.

I think it depends on your circumstances and level of risk you can stand. The warranty is going to cost you around £3.5K over three years. If you put the money in a separate account you can use it for repairs. If nothing goes wrong, you're quids in.

Interesting reading, we're looking at a Freelander 2 HSE but like the idea of an older RR for the money. Running costs and reliability concern me though. Will have a read up on the extended LR warranty.

What sort of RR should I be expecting for £20-25k at a dealer?

This is the position I'm in at the moment. We've been looking at FL2's including HSE's and have come to the conclusion that 'value for money' isn't there. So we're considering upping the budget just a bit to get us into FFRR and RRS territory. Just can't decide on an older RRS S/C vs a TDV8.

What sort of money do you think you will need to go to? What sort of age/mileage FFRR/RRS would you be looking at?

I've set a ceiling of about £28k, and that includes a part-ex. I've seen a mixed bag of ages from 2005 RRS S/C, through 07 or 08 plate TDV8. They all seem to be mid-high 30k's through to 40k's mileage.

Have my eye on a particular one that won't please the boss due to colour, but there you go.

I've got a TDV8 Vogue (08) with 30k miles on the clock, which I'll be selling soon.

In the meantime, I extended the LR warranty for £95 per month.

Sorry but to add to the above, the dealer offered to buy mine at £28,000 so I guess they'd add about £4,000 on to that for re-sale.

Slightly OT, but I'm (so far) only considering RRS, not necessarily FFRR. I only dropped into this thread because of the warranty reference. I figured I'd see what the masses thought about them.

I've had two RRS prior to the Vogue and enjoyed them both.

They corner better than the bigger FFRR and generally drive well.

The only probem that I had, which was a warranty job, was the handbrake mechanism seized on one of them.

The 2.7 engine was fine apart from a bit of turbo-lag at times.

The thing about warranty is that, unless you know what you are doing, anything going wrong is likely to be costly with these - and I have no idea at all with things mechanical, so I bought it for peace of mind.

Indeed. I can wield a spanner well enough, but sometimes it's better to admit that a specialist can have a crack at a problem.

I'm not considering the 2.7 having read the reports that all talk about the lag and slight lack of oomph. My current main car is a Disco 4 with the 3.0 SDV6 which goes rather nicely. A second car is required as we live in the sticks with weather and stuff and the current second car is not going to be up to the task (Scooby Impreza).

Makes the £45 a month I pay for my extended warranty on my 6 series seem cheap!

How do the FFRRs hold up at higher mileages (say 60-80k)?
