Hi there,

my first post outside the Porsche forum, so please don't eat me!

Basically, I'm looking at possibly buying a used (dealer) TDV8 HSE Range Rover Sport. I've had a scour on the internet yet I've been unable to find the concrete
knowledge that I'm searching for. So if anyone has got any answers to the following questions, that would be appreciated.

1) What are the known weaknesses of the mechanical aspects of the vehicle?
2) Ownership costs - ignoring the obvious fuel economy issues and tax costs, does anyone have anything bad to say about running one of these as a daily driver? such as servicing, dealer attitude etc
3) What is the likelihood that being on the wrong side of 25, I will look like a drug dealer? laugh
4) Anyone had an experience of driving the following cars compared to the RRS : Q7/Cayenne/X5

Regards,

/A

As someone who has only just bought one after looking for 4 months+, I'll have a go at your questions...

1) What are the known weaknesses of the mechanical aspects of the vehicle?

Haven't heard of any real problems. Some people have posted of burst turbos but that is typical of any turbo charged engine. From what I hear, the TDV8 is widely regarded as one of the best engines ever in a RR

2) Ownership costs - ignoring the obvious fuel economy issues and tax costs, does anyone have anything bad to say about running one of these as a daily driver? such as servicing, dealer attitude etc

About £110 to fill with diesel eek and somewhere around 27MPG average for me so far. From what I've heard on other forums, some dealers very good others not so - fairly typical of any marque. If you've come from a porker you will find the servicing pretty cheap!!

3) What is the likelihood that being on the wrong side of 25, I will look like a drug dealer?

You will most definitely look like a drug dealer (especially if you have the tinted rear windows) but do you give a hoot?? You'll be clad in luxury, great driving position and a FANTASTIC engine.

4) Anyone had an experience of driving the following cars compared to the RRS : Q7/Cayenne/X5

Q7 is not as comfortable and goes through tyres like nobody's business. Does not feel as special as the RRS. Been in a Cayenne and liked it but again didn't feel as special (was the old model - new one is meant to be much better). X5 - it's a BMW - no more to say.

The TDV8 is truly fantastic to drive - mountains of torque when you need it and smooth as silk - and the noise!! The TDV6 is good but the V8 is streets ahead in my opinion.

Go for it!!

Plenty of experience with the RRS... wink

1) Mechanically, it's a very strong package with no known weaknesses that I'm aware of. The only thing to possibly bear in mind is that the RRS can wear out bushes faster than you sometimes expect.
2) Servicing costs; well, it depends what you're comparing with. The RRS is a premium product... My recent 60k service was approx £600.
3) Depends how you 'Bling' it up. Personally, I find the blinged up cars vulgar!
4) Can only compare with the X5. I liked the drivers seat in the X5... That's about it!! (When you give the TDV8 some beans, it sounds cloud9)

As with everything, if it has been properly serviced, mileage shouldn't be an issue... Especially 60k, that's barely run-in!! smile

I got my 2007/57 52K mile car for less than your budget on a private sale so you should be fine.

60K mileage is nothing these days and would only be regarded as just about average on a 4.5 year old car. As long as the car is looked after it should last for plenty more than that. There are loads of RRS about with 120K and over miles and still look pretty good. I drove a TDV6 before I bought my TDV8 that had a complete and detailed service history up to it's 109K miles and looked and drove as good as one I drove at 60k.

@Eddiebhoy

I am also looking down this route and understand having a RRS is not about MPG, but could you tell roughly what that translates to miles per tank?

I've only had it for two weeks so I don't know exactly. When full, the computer says just over 500 miles but that changes according to where you're driving - in town it drops a lot and then recovers when you get on the motorway. I average 30 or thereabouts on motorway and driving in town drags it down a bit. With mixed driving I think somewhere round the 450 mark should be pretty achievable.

To quote simply click on the quote icon at the top of the post you want to quote.

Miles per tank: £110/£1.40 = approx 78 litres/4.54609 = 17.3 gallons * 27 mpg = 466 miles.

Ive run my TDV8 RR Sport for 2 1/2 years

Despite an irrational hatred I took a test drive and was hooked

I honestly have no idea how I will replace it, and am in no hurry to

Mine gets 25mpg averaged over 20,000 miles

I considered the Q7 but it was just too big, and the Cayenne didnt appeal
My RR Sport is slab sided and Im still amazed how it squeezes into small (relatively) parking spaces - obviously F&R park assist helps there....

It was all weather capability which made me check it out
Year 1 on 6000 mile old Scorpions was pretty good
But year 2 in 2-3 foot of snow on Wintrac Extremes was just mind blowing
I was one of the few people mobile in the snowstorms last winter - the car was awesome

And driving 1000 miles from the Peak District to the Pyrenees last summer was just lovely
Although a 335d (mapped) would probably have got more than 30mpg at 80mph smile

PS I have rear gangsta glass which stops the kids wearing sunnies and also gives me some respect in the dodgier bits of town LMAO
