Time to change my R32 and I quite fancy a new-ish 110 SW.
Went down to my local dealer who had about 30 Range Rovers and Discos (and even more Freelanders) but only 1 Defender, a utility wagon 110. 2010 plate with 5k miles for £19k+vat.
Had a brief drive of that 110 and was actually quite impressed, very different to my '86 V8! I was a bit surprised at the lack of legroom compared to my old truck but the seats are comfy and it's quiet. It was a very basic spec model so no heated seats or screen (which I would really like) so I'll keep looking.
The newer models don't seem to be mentioned much in the Land Rover magazines, anyone got much experience of them?
Can't decide whether to go for all-black or something more traditional like keswick green with a white roof. That has a certain agricultural appeal...

Had an XS spec utility ... had the power upgraded to 165 hp and the speed limiter removed ...and it use to go along very nice.
Nice and toasty in winter..however the heater does tend to burn your left leg.
Being an anorak ...I prefer the station wagon look with the rear window rather than the blank side.
Car had good towing ability ...and to be honest I would prefer to tow with a puma defender than my L322.
If you want one with a white roof it will only be county spec ...so more likely no heat seats / screen / ac / alloy wheels etc.

They are as good as ever and with exactly the same foibles as they had in 1984 tbh.Went down to my local dealer who had about 30 Range Rovers and Discos (and even more Freelanders) but only 1 Defender, a utility wagon 110. 2010 plate with 5k miles for £19k+vat.

They really haven't changed that much. Diffs are 24 spline, there's a new door 1 piece door frame instead of welded in the corner, the bonnet is steel, has a Disco 3 look/derived dash, no front vents and a few other changes.
But overall the chassis is basically the same, the axles are, the breaks are, the LT230 is still there, the body, although using thinner Birmabright is the same.
The 2.4TDCI engine is ok, not sure it's any better than a Td5 though and the 6 speed while offering more gears and a lower crawl ratio and better anti-stall can be a weak point.
If these appeal I'd seriously have a look/test drive of a Jeep Wrangler Unlimited.
6 speed manual or 4 speed auto, faster, more powerful, more fun, just as good off road, better mpg, better specced too.

Errr.... Since when has the 6 sod box been a "weak point"???Btw - anti stall is a feature of the ECU... Technically, anti stall is in all electronic fuel injected vehicles. LR have just given it a different set of parameters for it to work within and made it into a feature.

Had a 2010 USW County with cold pack and A/C, plus my own mods.
Fuel consumption was just under 15mpg when towing heavy loads, yes it did have the Autologic power upgrade etc. we modifyed the seat rails to give an extra three quarter inch leg room which was fine for me at six foot.
Very good tow vehicle (other than fuel) would drag a 16 foot Ifor Williams loaded with no problem, turning circle is junk unless you fit 30mm spacers and adjust lock stops which then gives it a sensible turning circle, heater differcult to regulate and as said, heats up the left leg.
Sorry but the rear leg room and comfort is not for human beings, yes overall the 110 Puma is a great truck but I have now found a very low mileage Toyota Amazon which is just soooooooooooooooooooooooooo much better all round.

I've heard of a few failing, also I believe the same box can be issues in Transits.A friend had a 60th Anni 90, think it went through 3 gearboxes before the dealer had it back for good.

Yep, but either way it's a change from an 86 90/110 which the OP was using as a comparison.

Hardly a trend??? It's a mechanical device, you're going to get some failures... Then along comes the Internet to blow it out of proportion!TBH - The way some people use the clutch, I'm surprised there aren't more!!!

Same engine, smaller capacity...
Is it? Not saying it isn't, but a few weeks back when the info was touted, nobody seemed to know were the engine would hail from. The new Evoque has a 2.2 diesel, but isn't it a different engine to the Puma? The 2.2 in the Evoque is the same as used in the Freelander 2 (TD4 & SD4).

Park a 2.2 & 2.4 Defender side by side, open the bonnet and you'll not be able to tell the difference...
Yes and apparently no ,2.2 is derived from the 2.4 but the new 2.2 has a different 'beauty cover'/acoustic cover on the top of the engine that covers the whole top of the engine. Its just appeared on the microcat parts list.Stu
