Take my hat of to the Surrey 4x4 Response
Wish I could say the same of other regions bordering Surrey. Honest to God the state of some of their trucks makes eBay look like Stratstone.Apparently the more yellow strobes you have, the more qualified you are. Icing on the cake was at the South London L2B event, with a battered Disco 1 wearing the legend "Emergency Response Vehicle" in four-inch letters along the side. If ever your emergency requires the response of a jacked-up £500 eBay special festooned with discarded AA light bars and a chap wearing Hi-Viz smoking a roll up, you're in safe hands.

Agree with you to a point but we must not tar them all with the same brush, you will always get that type of thing in every club.
Some think that all the stickers etc keeps the plod from looking to hard at there trucks, last winter in all the snow I myself was out till silly hours (no flashing yellow lights) and must say it was a bit like M25 at rush hour, some will use it as an excuse to go and play sadly.
But if you were stuck in a drift I bet you would be happy to take up an offer of help, you may say "I would get myself out" but others may not be able too.

What's the sketch with these 4x4 Response things nowadays?
Only ask as Hants Plod are establishing their own scheme with background checks, vehicle inspection, driving assessment and interview.
I am a Police Officer and cannot for the life of me un derstand why Hants Plod, feel the need to create their own group, when there is already a very well established professional one in place already?! - http://www.hampshire4x4response.co.uk/Only ask as Hants Plod are establishing their own scheme with background checks, vehicle inspection, driving assessment and interview.

All I will say is that we are 'Community Resiliance' group, not any kind of '4x4 Emergency Service' or mud plugging club. Apparently the more yellow strobes you have, the more qualified you are. Please bear in mind that we all use our own vehicles, their primary role is in the most part nothing to do with response work however a small amount of time they are used for this purpose. For that reason most of the large decals (the logo) surrey use are maagnetic and will not remain on the car all year round.
Im trying to convert our flyer which explains in full from a PDF to image so I can upload but struggling.
If you have any specific questions please ask!

For a bit of shameless plugging, and a thread hijack - anyone in Hants & Berks interested in joining us, please check out the link Rick mentioned above. The "have-a-go-hero" guys are fairly quickly weeded out in our initial meetings for the very reasons mentioned above. To be honest what we need most of are clean, tidy, un-modified relatively modern cars that are capable in snow and ice and can carry a few passengers in comfort.

That's all very reassuring, but somewhat at loggerheads with my experience.
Can't say I place too much faith in an "assessment evening" that takes place in a rainy supermarket car park in the dark, and I'm not sure how a vehicle with the blatant and permanently embodied MOT fail of a Hi-lift Jack mounted horizontally across the middle of the bonnet, left to right, can be part of the scheme without affecting its credibility.
Agreed a 4x4 can be of great use to Plod, I know mine was last winter. I just suspect the force bordering Surrey want a more robust and dedicated scheme than they've perhaps experienced, hence they're taking management in to their own hands.
Good luck in Surrey
