Land Rover 90 fuel gauge reading full

My 1986 V8 90 fuel gauge started reading 3/4 full and stuck,i filled the tank and it went to full and stuck,when ign off it goes to empty,thought cure was simple bought new sender unit. when i operate the sender unit by hand when the float is down the gauge reads full and when float is up it goes to empty,but it will not stop in between ie 1/2 no matter where you hold the float any ideas ?

Are the wires wired correctly to the sender unit, and is the earth earthed correctly?

It was working fine so i presume wiring is correct,i did run a new earth to check it but no joy, looks like gauge may be defunct.
