Range Rover TD6 - Advice
Discussion
Hi all, some may of saw my recent post saying I was thinking about one of these on a 52/53 Plate - heard some horror stories and others swear by them, so what's the crack with the TD6 engines, would you all reccomend it as an engine or run a boring car for another 6 months and save for a TDV6 Sport? I really want a Vogue as the insurance is much cheaper being classed as an estate and I think I prefer the overall looks but I've became uncertain of this engine?! Help please!!
Many thanks!!
Many thanks!!
I have a 54 plate Td6 Vogue as my daily driver.
I like it. A lot.
Yes the TDV8 diesel is better, yes the 3.0 TDV6 Disco/RRS engine is better in every conceivable way but I still love mine.
I am no stranger to quick cars, check my garage, but I just don't understand all the fuss over the Td6 as it is ample for my needs (including 1 Lepton cruising in Europe). I love the sound of a straight six too, far better than a V6 imo.
Just make sure you check:
Diff recall done (free anyway if not)
Suspension works well
Electric steering wheel moves as it should (£1k fix)
Electric mirrors work (£460 fix each side)
Also factor in the fact that you WILL end up paying £1.5-2k for a new gearbox unless it has just been done.
Mine has cost me just over £2.5k over the last year and it will need a new gearbox over the next 6 months. Still doesn't put me off though.
Remember it is a £70k+ car and keeping it running takes deep pockets.
Nothing like it though on a cold morning.

Another option for a similar price (and probably marginally cheaper, fuel wise) is a 4.4 V8 with LPG. Plenty of threads on here on that subject. If you're doing low mileage, it won't be worth getting one converted but if you can find one that's already been done, it could be the way forward. They sound a helluva lot better too.
TD6 engine is the good old 6 cylinder BMW unit and a favorite with offroad rally raid guys as its bullet proof in 225bhp form. I run a 300bhp TD6 engine in an offroader .... dont worry about the engine as with other posts the gearbox is the weak point in the car ... however its an known problem with plenty of available outlets who specialise in change outs.
I have run a TD6 RR for 3 years with no issues.
