OK guys, pref the ones who own or have owned one. How are these, in say sport guise? Thinking of down sizing and freeing a bit of cash and looking at say a 2004.
How well do they go and pull. a 2l engine is, to me, quite small for a big car. (I have a 320CDI merc at the moment.)
We live on a hill in the sticks on a private estate and as such have a treck to get to a road, and if it snows, can be a pain.

You might do better going onto a Land Rover specific or Freelander specific forum.
Don't make the mistake of thinking that a 4x4 will get you anywhere in any conditions. Whilst they are very capable & will often go when others can't, you can slip & slide with the best of them. And if you get stuck its often in a big way. As many owners find out
Usually down to the tyres they're fitted with.
My own car is a 1986 RRC.

Budget?
Go for 04-55 plates, they have the latest facelift and most of the niggles were ironed out.
Buy the td4. Dont buy a petrol. Ever.
Auto/manual is upto your own preference, auto's get 3-4mpg less than manuals.
Bodystyle will depend on your needs, 3 doors look better but 5 doors better for family's. The interior is quite spacius but the boot is a bit on the small side.
Specs go from, E,S,SE,HSE. Buy either an SE or HSE. They have the best kit levels.
Check everything works electrically, check the boot and lift the lockable floor and feel the carpet, if its wet then the rear boot seal has gone.
They like regular servicing and decent parts, if it says britpart. Dont fit it!
Also the best tyres go to the back, and dont buy cheap budgets, it needs good m+s rated tyres to get the best from it. I paid £650 for 4 tyres, they have covered 17.5k now and the fronts are still above 6mm tread.
Unlike other LR's, they dont rust away and are superb on snow due to decent weight and a cleaver traction control system to help you keep moving if you stick a wheel in the mud or such.
Ive an 04 SE 3 door manual, ive covered 30k in mine, its done everything ive asked and is a great car.
Mine is remapped and runs about 38-44mpg depending on town/motorway driving.
Ive michelin m+s rated tyres and i never had any issues on ice/snow as i drove it accordingly, as my insurance is dear enough!
I have the 3 door as i dont have kids and its mainly me in the car, the SE spec has everything i need, lots of heated things to play with.
Buy a good one that's been looked after properly and you will have a decent car, just remember that landrover's love maintanance and hate neglect. Oh, and never let them know your in a hurry!

Well I went to the other end of the scale as wanted a car to lug the dogs around in and would only do a few miles a day so was wary of diesel due to not warming up etc. Picked up a very early 1.8k series 5dr Freelander with service history. I have had various cars over the years with a K series incl my Elise so knew all about the HGF problem but also the little cost to repair.
Have had it for 3 months now with no problems, Even found a 6 cd player under the seat the other day!
I had some decent tyres put on and the tracking all sorted and it seems like a different car and am looking fwd to some snow. cost peanuts to insure on Admiral multi car.
Unless you are looking to do lots of miles I would consider a cheapy is the point I'm trying to make.

Bought a 54 plate 3 door S TD4 three years ago for winter use, dogs and logs it had 29k on it when I bought it, now coming up to 70k, apart from servicing, it has had a bad electrical connection on injector 1 which cost £30 including labour to fix. Its great, goes anywhere in anyweather with no fuss or bother.
