L322 Gearbox issue

Hi Folks

Any thoughts on this one?

I have a 2003 HSE with the 4.4V8 and 5 speed auto with 120k on the clock. The last couple of days the gearbox has been really rough whilst cold, once it warms up it shifts perfectly again even under heavy acceleration. About 18 months ago I changed the fluid & filter in the box and all looked fine, clean looking fluid, no bits or lumpy fluid like I've read about.

I also noticed that there was a whining noise whilst driving along which I thought was coming form the transmission, I pulled over and the noise continued even with the car stationary & in neutral so that was obviously not the gearbox. The whining noise has since gone away but the shift is still rough when cold.

I'm going to get it up on the ramps next weekend & check the fluid etc but anyone heard of anything similar?

If the transmission is in neutral and the engine is running, the transmission can still make noise because the oil pump is working.

Based on what you say the symptoms are I would check the fluid level - it's probably a litre or two low.
