Hi all, right a couple of quick questions, I`m thinking of changing wifes P38 DHSE for 03/04 TD6.
[A] I`ve done a bit of internet research, and found that there is a reacuring problem with the gearbox`s on these...how common is this?
the car i`m thinking of is an 03, but only done 62000 miles.
[B] we live in France, the car I`m thinking of has xenon`s..can you just switch these to left hand drive, or are we talking complete new lights?
Any advice greatly appreciated, as am viewing in the UK next week
Cheers SFM

Switching lights to EU is easy peasy fortunately!

Take off the cover behind each light and flip the small silver switch next to the bulb holder.

Lights off when you do it, obv. One of them is a bit tricky to access, can't remember which though! Once you've done it once it is a 2 minute job.

Disco is a V6, FFRR is a (BMW derived) Straight 6.

As for the Td6 gearbox, they go, often along with the transfer box motor, at around 100k. Geatbox replacement is around 1900-2500, transfer motor is around 900. Neither covered on most (after market) warranties as its a 'known fault'.

Man up and buy the Rangie. wink

I assure you that if you buy an X5 or VW you'll see someone (like me) cruise by in a FFRR and you'll know you've made a catastrophic mistake. Yes, mine has cost me about 4k this year (4 new tyres 285/40/20, new steering column, new gearbox, new transfer motor, new air suspension compressor, new boot seal) but it is incomparable to all other motors.

Bentley levels of comfort and you can drive them up mountains. I was in -37C (-22C real temp, -37C inc wind chill) two weeks ago. The Rangie kept the cabin at a constant 22C, started fine without an aux diesel warmer and drove up an Alp on std tyres.

Buy one now before they're illegal smile

Usually, flushing the gearbox oil properly deals with the issue of overheating and failure, also check the radiator as i think part of it cools the gearbox and if blocked can help overheat the box.

I think, but dont take that as truth.

Otherwise, make sure it's serviced and has a decent history.

Also, have a google on the VW 4x4, it can be just as bad for large bills.

Oh yes, the bottom few bars of the rad specifically cools the auto box.

As for gearbox flush (its a sealed for life unit) - I read that too and then had it done. 5k miles later the box went! Horses for courses I guess.
