MOT time.. Nervous with an old Landy
Discussion
So, My 1991 200TDi 90 is going in for it's MOT on Wednesday. I'm slighlty nervous, this being the first time I've taken an old Landy for an MOT.
It's fundamentaly sound, but, I have a few questions, will it fail for:-

It's fundamentaly sound, but, I have a few questions, will it fail for:-
- Slight leak of PAS fluid (straight to the floor, doesn't foul any components)
- Passenger seat has not been refitted (recent new battery, modified seats that have to be removed for access)

Yes* on both (sorry). No leaks allowed form the PAS, and battery "should" be accessible without tools so Fireman Sam can isolate it when you crash by chopping the earth lead.- Slight leak of PAS fluid (straight to the floor, doesn't foul any components)

*subject to definition of "slight" and the judgement on the day of the MOT man.

How long have you been an MOT tester as you are talking rubbish about the battery.*subject to definition of "slight" and the judgement on the day of the MOT man.

A leak in the power steering that shows a joint or component has failed is a fail. If it isn't bad clean it all up before you leave home. It doesn't need a passenger seat but make sure the battery is secure.
What's the chassis like, they tend to rust on the rear X member plus check for body rust as I've seen a few suffering in the wrong places.

Battery:

Check security and condition. Reason for rejection: Battery insecure or leaking electrolyte
Power steering:
http://www.motuk.co.uk/manual_230.htm
Reason for rejection: b. a leak in the system showing that a component, joint or seal has failed

In terms of security, my new battery is bigger than a standard One, so is going to be tightly secured in the tray with either bungee cord or a ratchet strap. If I get time to refit the pax seat, then the battery is very difficult to see under the seat.
I take the point on power steering, the garage is a friendly local, so hopefully he can nip it up before the test.
Might need to rethink battery security, would my idea be good enough? It's pretty secure as it stands without and restraint...

Make sure nothing is obviously wrong (light work, handbrake works etc) then just take it and see if if fails on anything, and get that work done. I know people who spend hours and lots of money every MOT getting stuff sorted out in case it might fail - or having 'pre-MOTs' done which cost more than the MOT itself!!

OK, so that's what I got told by an MOT man having had fixed seats fitted, and I did say it all depends on the judgement of the MOT man of the day. Obviously the one who looked at my car was an arse. Wasn't you was it?Edited by jagracer on Monday 27th February 18:52
Anyway, regardless of the isolation scenario, how the feck does MOT man check for the basic battery security if he can't actually get to it?
So, after the nervous wait, I called the garage, and have some good news, all simple fail points:-
- PAS fluid leak (I told them about it pre test, they fixed it already)
- Horn only partially effective (I used it and it made a noise, it appears only 1 of the 2 horns is working, I hadn't realised as this is my first defender, I just htought it was quiet)
- Number plate bulb
- Screen washer not working, like I saw, I noticed this on the way to the garage this morning, the spade connector on the motor is broken, new motor coming this afternoon
