Anyone know what it signifies, occasionally the engine seems to cut out momentarily and it flashes, but what is it connected to that's going crook?

I'm guessing it's a post 1992/3 one with air suspension?

That light is the traction control believe it or not

Shouldn't really come on unless you're in sticky gooey stuff!

I see from your profile it's a 1988 Range Rover.

It's not traction control, you don't have traction on a 1988 model.

The light is the "check engine" light for the EFi if it looks like this;

Although that link does refer to a post 1990's car with ABS and the later "Hotwire" injection system. As a 1988 I would think yours will be the earlier "Flapper" system.

{edit} I see you put 3.9, so now I'm confused, the theory is still good thoiugh {/edit}

Start by checking sensors, it's a simple system so not much to check.

Fuel injection/Emission Failure

Illumination of this amber warning light notifies you of a malfunction in the electronic fuel injection system. This signal will also illuminate in the event of component failure of the vehicle's emission system. Any malfunctioning of either system will impair the efficiency and performance of the vehicle and you are advised to consult your dealer as soon as possible if the illumination is given....
