Hi all,

Pal of mine is in the market for a Discovery got about £5k to spend

Has seen this one on the 'trader

Other than the lack of MoT - any other perils to look out for on these?

Any advice gladly received - ta

I'd want to pay a little less for that to be honest. It's quite leggy but otherwise looks pretty tidy. My facelift 2002 ES 7 seat 100k cost me £6k 18 months ago so I would think something like that would be doable for £5k today.

This one is still on its rear air suspension, definitely check its working via the control on the dash, it should go up and down smoothly and quickly.

Check the headlining around the sun visors for signs of leaking - the sunroofs can put water into the headlining which then pours out at the front, not a difficult fix though.

Check ALL the electrics. Check the low range and diff lock works.

Good cars.

Far too expensive that.

I recently sold my 2001 ES with 10 months MOT and 4 months tax for £2750, rear suspension had been converted to coils, injector loom replaced, EGR removed and absolutely zero welding underneath.

Check them for rust, the chassis can and do rust for fun on these,

I loved mine, and I really wish I could have kept it. I also think the pre facelifts look better than the facelift cars

They do. For me, they really need the lower spoiler at the front. Realise that it caused approach / departure angle problems but they still look better.

I guess a question is, what do they want to do with it? £5k would give you plenty of scope to buy a minter of a D1 or RRC and put some change in your pocket. Maybe even a nice p38a.

The D2 is a good vehicle, but it's biggest real world enhancement over the other models is ACE (if equipped) and 4 wheel TCS.

Although ACE can add some pennys to runing costs I understand as the years go past.

Whilst 4 wheel TCS control is a step forwards, its around this vintage you lose the centre dif lock - worth checking if you are doing serious off roading.

Diff lock reappeared towards the end of the D2 though, and can be reconnected with a little work.

I thought it was the early cars that had the right transfer box but no linkage?

Sorry yes that's what I meant - the later ones had it reconnected again IIRC.
