Op if you aren't wanting the Landy for towing or a workhorse you might want to consider a TJ Jeep Wrangler. A very similar vehicle to the D90 (almost identical wheelbase, same sort of axles, suspension, chassis and just as good off road), but with more driver room inside.

Nope.The original 80's YJ Wrangler (square headlights) had leaf suspension, although it does a good job of offering similar travel to a coil sprung Landy and is far superior to a Series Landy.
The TJ Wrangler (round headlights) is all coil and has a much better front suspension design than Land Rover's limiting radius arm design.
Both the Wrangler and Defender are brilliant vehicles and very similar, but you can see how each is tailored for specific markets. The Wrangler is much more of a toy and recreation vehicle while the Landy has stout utilitarian workhorse roots.
A TJ has a 93.1" wheelbase vs the Defenders 92.9" wheelbase. They are about the same width and length. Similar weight, box section ladder chassis, live axles, coil suspension, modular body design.
The only real differences is the Wrangler has a poxy tow rating (1000lbs might be listed as 1000kg for UK spec). I'm not sure why it has such a low rating, the components it's made from can handle more, but I think in the US if people want to tow they buy a Dodge Ram, so there is a degree of not marketing the Jeep to compete with full size trucks.
Seat layout, the Wrangler has a slightly longer bonnet and larger seating area due to no bulkhead behind the seats. The rear seats are also forward facing and take up a lot of the rear load area. It's primary focus is to carry 4 people and very small quantity of luggage. A Defender by contrast has a cramped front seating area and a large rear load area which is good for hauling (again showing it's utilitarian roots).
Options. A Defender has almost no options, diesel manual is about it. A Wrangler has auto gearboxes or manual and a choice of engines, including a fairly powerful one. Air con and electric windows have been available for far longer too.
I digress, if the OP only wants a Landy no probs. But driver space may always be an issue, even more so in a pick up. A Wrangler (despite much UK ignorance/arrogance) is a very good alternative vehicle so long as you don't want to tow or haul gear. But if it's off roading 4x4 fun, then it does it extremely well.
