My 1986 90 Defender is in need of a new engine.
What should I do? It is fitted at the moment with a 2.3 petrol / LPG
Was thinking of keeping to petrol and get a v8 or convert to a TDI

What wis best cost and option and can anyone suggest in Aberdeen area?

200 TDi from either a Defender or a Disco all day long!

Slots straight in using the existing mounting bolts too! Think the disco engine may require a slight tweak on the turbo pipes but nothing major.

Be quick mind as most of the 200 TDi Disco's have rotted away & gone for scrap!

200Tdi.

But, parts are becoming more difficult to find.

Alternatively a 300 tdi, but that will require more works such as a new gearbox.

Avoid anything like a transit engine!

BMW 2.8i 6cyl Petrol Cheap motor, plenty of spares, 190+hp, and a factory fitted engien by LR (albeit in South Africa).

Parts needed:

1x Range rover P38 diesel manual gearbox (R380)
x1 Defender R380 gear shift arrangement (to swap for the P38 shifter)
1x Engine.

If you go to your main dealer they will have all the parts listed on their Microcat parts database.

Do what one of our customers did to his 130 double-cab; put a proper engine in there, and get some Caterpillar diesel power!
