RR Sport 3.0 - much better than 2.7 & 3.6?
Discussion
Possibly looking at one of these for my wife and the improved fuel economy over the previous engines appeals (along with slightly updated looks).
Does anyone have any real life experience of how much better the newer engine is? Any thoughts gratefully received.
Also, am I likely to find a nice one without starship miles for circa £28k?

Compared to the 2.7, the 3.0 is a revelation. Plenty of power, refined handing and quite nippy. The 3.6 TDV8 is very nice but no real noticeable difference of the 3.0 although it does sound better.
Given enough time, you will get anything for £28k........on another forum, the face lifted 3.0's are allegedly losing £1k/month currently??!!

Firstly, I wouldn't read too much into the values. The RRS tends to drop in value quite dramatically for the first couple of years but then starts to level off. There has also been some gossip regarding a new RRS which has slowed things down a little.
The Engines: The 2.7 & 3.0 are both V6 diesels. The 2.7 is fitted to the first generation RRS and the 3.0 is fitted to the current shape. The 3.0 is a completely different engine, with a massive difference in power output... It's approx 37% more powerful. The 3.6 is a V8 diesel, the 3.0 is close to the 3.6 in power output but they both have very different personalities. The 3.6 TDV8 also sounds FANTASTIC!!!
Economy: In theory, the 3.0 is going to be the most economic, especially with the current 8spd gearbox. However, as with all cars, a lot of it comes down to your driving style!! Drive that 3.0 hard and the economy will suffer but likewise, drive the 3.6 lightly and you'll get 29mpg. I normally get approx 24mpg out of my TDV8, I've had 31.9 out of it and I wasn't having to drive like Miss Daisy either!!
The current shape was only available with the TDV8 for approx 12mths and was never fitted with the new 8spd gearbox. If you've got an eye on residual values, I would personally try & find one of these TDV8s as they are nowhere near as common as the 3.0.
Finally, don't hang around asking too many questions, just get out there and test drive them.

I have to admit to waiting to being able to afford a revised, second hand model 3.0TDV6 myself over the previous generation 2.7TDV6 but to be honest I also wasn't too bothered if I ended up with the 3.6TDV8 either - as long as both were the face lift version (purely so it would look newer for longer).
I have one of the early 3.0TDV6 cars though as my car has a 6spd auto box not the fancy 8spd mentioned in a previous post. After previously owning a Q7 and X5 - both of which had a 3.0TDV6 motor - similar in specs 240bhp ish, same torque and same mpg I wasn't willing to settle for anything slower (acceleration wise). The RRS won it for me for being that wee bit classier... Then again if you live in or around a city (e.g. like Aberdeen) then they are pretty much as common as muck!

What year was the 8 speed box introduced?
Is the 3.6 engine in the newer shape revised or is it the same as in the previous shape model?
The 8spd was introduced late last year. You can easily tell coz it's the one with the selector that pops up.Is the 3.6 engine in the newer shape revised or is it the same as in the previous shape model?
The 3.6 was available in both previous & current shape. It was used from late 2006 until early 2011 (IIRC)

The 2.7 was a single turbo charged engine, discontinued with the 2010MY Facelift. The 3.6 TDV8 dual turbo'd engine, with one turbo on each bank. carried on for less than a year after the intro of the 2010MY. The 3.0 TDV6 is a twin, sequential turbo engine, 2010MY intro with 6 speed auto. 2012MY switched to 8speed, along with the removal of the split tail gate etc.
