I was driving through Hayfield in Derbyshire yesterday and spotted this.......couldn't resist stopping in and having a look......

It's strange I expected the paint to be gloss but it's a matt finish.....it even had a holder between driver and passenger for a couple of SA80's........I tried to convince the mrs last night that we need it but for some stupid reason she thinks bills, food, water etc is more important.....pfffh.....what would she know.

At the moment there are a few about. But it wont last long as the days are numbered for the Landrover with the m.o.d Future operations require specialist vehicles that the landrover can no longer fill. Jobs that dont requires a specialist role will be done by purpose built pick-ups.

There are a few around, i know, i built some them a few years back for a client although one or two have slipped past the net and been released to the public since.

The ones I built were accident damaged cars that were disposed of via the MoD auctions. We'd strip them down and rebuild them using civvy parts where necessary and remanufacture the XD parts when needed. As they'd never been 'on the road' the accident had never been recorded as write offs. They all had to be SVA'd because the Defender XD was never sold on the civilian market and was never type approved.

On a visit to the factory many many years ago i watched them come down the line mixed in with all the other customer cars, IIRC the GS spec 90's were £21k and the 110's £23k.

The ones to look out for and IMHO the best are the Winterised & Waterproofed variants. These had an additional £13k worth of conversion done to them. Thermal linings, webasto space heaters, radiators in the load bed, waterproofed electrics, snorkels plus a whole heap more. There were two levels of waterproofing, A & B. A being normal roadgoing trim which would allow wading up to the base of the windscreen and B full waterproofing which allowed fully immersed wading (driving underwater - obviously the snorkel and exhaust were above) which required a couple of hours work to prepare. The hardtops also had sunroofs fitted (std LR Britax jobs but with a metal panel instead of glass) as escape hatches.

I'd jump at the chance to have another (I had one as a rally car courtesy of the MoD) and am thinking of building something to XD specs but with a civvy twist for the summer.

This thing was immaculate, it looked like it rolled out of the factory yesterday.

The biggest surprise was the amount of components that were bespoke and not from a road version.

Impressive toy!

There are a few nice Wolfs about. But the majority have been built from wrecks. Although that is starting to change with most of the Landrover fleet being started to be disposed of. Prices start around £7,500. Just a note. Anyone bidding on one fom Withams should view first and not just bid on the online tender alone. It's not uncommon to bid on a vehicle and end up with something else.

It's not bespoke. But standard military fittment on wolfs. Don't forget the WMIK. There are a few of those in private hands.

Sorry Bluethunder I meant bespoke to the military vehicles as apposed to the road vehicles.........bad explanation on my part.....basically, wow that's different from a road Defender :-)
