Mk2 Disco much better than a Mk1????
Discussion
Considering a Disco MK2, I've read there were loads of improvements when it was release but where these for the better??? What where the best of the changes??d
I'm also looking to bring the styling up to the modern day with some newer alloys, what other changes can be done, newer front grill??? I dont want to make it look like something it isnt I just want something a little different

My D2 TD5 was far worse reliability wise than my D1, which supposedly was also the least reliable model, the ES V8i Auto.
To drive, they are worlds apart. The D2 has far better roadholding, but the steering is quite light compared to the D1, I also found the D2 to crash around far more (mine was converted from Air to Coils, but still had ACE).
My V8 took so much abuse (see my profile pic), it really was driven hard, and went places it really shouldn't have. The only thing that went wrong with it in 3k miles was an air flow meter.
My TD5 needed - New MAF sensor, new NSF hub & sensor, 3 new window regulators, new viscous fan, re-conditioned air con pump including pipes, new injector loom, new PAS box, and I'm sure there's more, I sold it knowing it had a leaking gearbox, possible ECU problems etc. etc. This was in 6k miles, and no real proper off road work.

I too went from a V8 D1 to a TD5 D2, both ES auto versions and plenty of toys.
The D2 is a far better all round car, felt much bigger, handled better and generally more modern. It didn't behave all the time though and I too went through some issues. Engine loom problems with oil, ACE pipe corrosion, fuel pump, gearbox selector switch are the ones I remember.
However, when sorted it was brilliant. Not fast and sounded rubbish compared to the V8. Parts were not that expensive and the fixes were easy. Buy one with your eyes wide open and you'll not be disappointed.
Facelift fronts add value but prone to having bits nicked off them I gather.

The D2 is a more sophisticated vehicle, so dynamically superior, however more complex. This additional complexity means more electrical gremlins and more things that can go wrong.
No necessarily less reliable, just different. Drive both and see what you prefer is the only real answer.

I have a 3.9i auto D1 and my mum has a TD5 auto D2, we have both only just bought them and paid around the same amount of money for them. I specifically wanted a V8 after driving the diesel and being unimpressed, she specifically wanted a diesel as she does more miles and her Landy will be used for dog carrying.
Mine is in better condition although they are both structurally solid and has more toys (mine is an ES and hers a GS) but she wasn't bothered about leather plus a lot of the other stuff which were options in the D1 were standard on the D2 (airbags, ABS and the like). Don't underestimate how different a D1 is to a D2, we were comparing ours, every panel just about is different.
Basically it depends what you want it for. In all honesty mine is used as a bit of a 'Chelsea tractor', for going to work, shopping etc. and whilst hers is doing some of the same it is perhaps a bit more of a work horse.
I find my D1 very sophisticated but I'm used to driving a 45 year old Triumph everyday ...

The D2 is no less reliable than the D1, but as someone said above, there is just more to go wrong. Lots more buttons on the dash, lots more electrics!
I had a 1999 Disco 2 4.0 V8 Auto... It had lots of toys for its age, Bose stereo, Leather, Electric Heated seats, Hill Descent Control etc etc etc.
Things I fixed while I had it...
New Air Suspension Compressor
New PAS pump
New Alternator
New Clock
New Stainless Steel Fuel Tank (up in rear wing due to ageing LPG conversion)
Things that were still wrong when I sold it...
Drivers heated seat would get too hot and burn you
Front sunroof didn't work, and leaked
Hinges needed doing on the back door/boot
Oil leaks from rocker covers
Cruise control didn't work
Rear speakers buzzed
Three amigos - warning lights on dashboard
It was a fantastic machine though - loved driving it. I'd have another, just perhaps one in slightly better nick.

I had a d1 3.9 v8s and took it from 90k to 120k and in that time I replaced an alternator and a clutch slave. ( oh and a dash top on warranty)
in 03 I bought a new td5 d2 which I've still got and so far done 80k. the d2 has rear air but no ace.
after 2 weeks it had je stage 2 upgrade with bigger intercooler ecu map and turbo tweek so actually has more power than the old v8, but not as nice an engine note.
In 80k and 9 years I've done 1 set of tyres. 4 mafs' 1 set of rear fuel lines ( cocked up recall) 2 manifold studs and a rear hub oil seal.
the D2 is a much better car but I do miss the v8
