Not sure about the long term, but picked one up a couple of months ago after a lot of research. All I'll say is get Auto and leather, it makes a very big difference to the feel to the extent its almost a completely different car.
Cheers Harry, long time no see, you still got the V8S....? I Love my Disco 4 so if the reliability of that is anything to go by it should be ok just don't want them to buy something that's gonna be off the road lot as it will be their only car...Hope you are well mate.

Blimey, V8S went about 6 years ago, I've had a Cerbera ever since (they did overlap for a bit so was two TVR family for a while). Although don't seem to find the time to get out in it nowdays.
We had a freelander 1 which eventually had to be scrapped (drivetrain issues) - and it was never really that reliable.
A friend has had a freelander 2 for the past 3 years, and there is no comparison, really. The freelander 2 feels more like a range rover inside, the td4 engine has plenty of go, and overall it feels like it's 20 years newer.
Don't know much about how good they are off road, but as a road car, the Freelander 2 seems brilliant.

Surprisingly good. It's biggest limitation is ground clearance and the OEM tyres, but the relatively small overhangs make them pretty useful - ours saw quite a bit of mud, greenlanes, snow and so on - more than most I'd expect. It's never going to compete with the more serious stuff that have proper diffs and so on, but they'll surprise a few in the right hands. A set of AT's transforms them - I fitted Grabbers and the difference was night and day without any noticeable negative effects. To add a bit more to my last post which was written in a hurry, my only real criticism is the centre console / nav / entertainment side of things. I've said a few times on here that it felt a bit dated when we first bought ours (brand new in 08 and kept it for 30 months). The nav is pretty crap, the whole centre console area feels a bit archaic, the audio system is good but the only way to connect an ipod is with an 3.5mm aux cable and the sound quality isn't particularly great doing it that way. The newer ones are miles better.
Handling wise they're brilliant, ridiculously chuckable and has no right to be capable of as much fun in the corners as it can be. The downside of the good handling is they are a touch crashy over the bumpy stuff, but even as someone with a totally knackered spine I think it's a worthwhile tradeoff (especially compared to the X-trail which replaced it - miles better equipment, much smoother and more comfortable, but handles like a fridge and has zero character).

I brought a 57 plate petrol hse freelander 2 i6 about 8 months ago and i cannot fault it one bit, they are very well built and it feels just like a range rover inside, i have done 11,000 miles in that time and it is very comfortable it is a little thirsty but it still averages about 22mpg or 29mpg on a long journey which isnt too bad for a 3.2 and i would definetly have another.
I purchased the HST model coming up two years ago and still love driving it, have only had minor issues *touches wood* but still can't bring myself to part with it. Even had one garage try and get me to swap for a RR sport and i still wanted to keep the freelander.
I like that it is not a large 4x4, but still does everything you need it to, very comfy.

Just like a Range Rover? Seriously? Nothing against the F2 but it is nothing like a Range Rover inside or out.The Volvo S6 was a decent engine in its day but it feels lethargic today. The 13 model has the T4 from the Evoque and it makes a world of difference. The 13 car is transformed with that engine and the new interior.
