Advice for purchase of used Vogue.....
Discussion
Evening guys,
Worked in the trade for nearly 10 years for mainly german marques, friend has asked me to help him with purchase of used Vogue, all he has told me so far is it has to be black and have big wheels, waiting on age/budget....
Any advice you can give me on what to look for (areas of concern, what to avoid and options the car should have), along with any suggested dealers/independants in the Glasgow area would be much appreciated.....
Cheers
Steve

Theres tons of information (and also occasionally a car or two for sale) on fullfatrr.com. Main choice if they have a budget of 21-25k is whether they want petrol or diesel. The 4.4 jag engined car is said to be the quietest, faster than the diesel but thirsty (18-20mpg real-world). They go for good value money around 16-20k for a 2007-2009 model. Then you have the 4.2 supercharged which you'll get into a 07/08 for around 20-23k. Or you can try for the TDV8 diesel which sounds like a tractor in my opinion, but is frugal and still relatively quick for a 3 ton car.
There are two specs that will sit in the budget, which are Vogue and Vogue SE. The latter comes with some extra toys like auto dimming mirrors, heated and cooled front seats, heated windscreen and some other stuff. All of the Supercharged ones are Vogue SE with Rear Seat Entertainment (TVs in the headrests) included along with some other goodies like infinitely variable electronic diffs mid and rear (handy for some proper off-roading, but probably not a deal breaker).
Gearboxes need an oil change 50k miles regardless of model after 2007, which can cost around £450 if you want it done properly. Otherwise you'll risk the box failing around 80k+ although some people are on 120k+ and have no issues. Diesels benefit from removing the EGR (around £40) and Superchargeds occasionally have issues with sticking rear callipers (nothing a quick visual check can't sort out).
Personally I went for a Black 07 Supercharged as it had ALL the toys and 20" wheels and privacy glass in the rear. It's the best car I've ever driven and while it's not the fastest, it picks up quick. I've also had a few cheapish mods done to make it even faster which didn't take too much effort to sort out. I got mine for around 5k cheaper than the equivelent TDV8 (in miles / spec) and so far it's going to average out cheaper when you include fuel/insurance over the first 35k miles.
Tyres are around £800-1200 depending on wheel size and you'll go through a set in 15-20k miles if you hoon it. Same kinda prices/lifetime for brakes too. There are all kinds of electrical gremlins, so some people get a warranty too. I test drove around 8 cars before I settled on mine, and it wasn't the best cosmetically on the outside, but it's been quite solid so far!

Agree with JGS82 above, other than get the TDV8 engine, its a cracker. Super chip and you wont want to drive anything else. Check all the electrics, dodgy rear view cameras, dodgy fuel gauges all worth a check. The SE with rear entertainment keeps the kids quiet for any length of journey.
You're welcome! From the sounds of it he probably has is eye on the Supercharged as they often had privacy glass and came with 20" wheels as standard. Prices will go up a bit over winter and start to drop when people take delivery of the new style Range Rover, so might be worth holding out unless he can get a great deal.
