I'm wondering if the value of the current 2nd hand Defender range is going to firm up when the new Defender is launched...I mean it's going to be very different to the entire range that went before it, Diesel Turbo, 200, 300, TD5, 2.4, etc...the common thread thru all that was essentially the body remained largely unchanged and the gearboxes changed little from the Lt77 to the R380 (as far as I'm aware with my limited knowledge) and very easy to rebuild/repair and up till the TD5, very easy for the home mechanic to maintain/repair.

There also seems to be a higher price point for good 200 & 300 Tdis - they are commanding more money than the later Td5 equivalent models and some of the early 2.4 tdci models have seemingly plummeted in value. Will the earlier (200/300) models increase in value with the new models introduction? Crystal ball time? lol

Cheers,

C.

One of Defender's many strong points is its simplicity, and the bogging down with tech to appease those who want an Olde Englishe version of an X5 has ruined the concept.
Analogue is the future where Defenders are concerned hence the strong residuals on older models.

I am looking to buy a S2a or early S3 - prices seem to be all over the place, what should I be paying for a sound, unmodified and "reliable" (!) one?

Good question! Go look at and drive a few and avoid dealers when buying smile

I'm not up with the Series LR product, but I'd imagine there's a load of info out there in some LR specific forums - LRO, Landyzone, etc.

£3k should get a good early S3 - a little more £3500 - £4000 for a reasonable S11a

A good S3 will be £4000+

Defender values are not always clear cut as they can vary a lot dependant on condition etc. You can have a 20,000 mile 08 Puma which has been used for school runs and is mint, or you can have a 20,000 mile 08 Puma which has been used on a farm - the thing that makes the Defender market place tricky is there is such disparity in conditions as few other vehicles can have such hard or easy lives depending on their use...
