Hi all
Right, been looking to replace P38 DHSE
Would love another Rangey... but, keep hearing about gearbox problems on the early td6`s
it`s a £3000 replacement!
How common is this? looking to spend about £16k on replacing the wifes car, am i going to be on tenderhooks worrying whether the box is going to go? or do i go for a volkswagon 3.0 altitude Touarag? newer car, less money. It would be a shame as i love the Range Rovers, but have better things to spend my money on than garage repair bills.

nobody really knows how common it is as the issue happens on older vehicles outside warranty. Its a high production volume engine/box used in BMWs and Range Rovers, so out of hundreds of thousands of units sold, there are a few dozen reports in forums of the issue

Its a risk you take buying an older vehicle I guess. You can have the box serviced for £200 ish and hope for the best

statistically you have to be unlucky to have a faulty one, so just buy the newest, lowest mileage car you can afford

My TD6 has 125k on the clock and runs like a dream. The gearbox is a common problem with the TD6 so you either pays your money and take your chances or look for another marque

see my post in general gassing

I was unlucky

Yoy can get a replacement fitted for less than £2k, and there are upgraded parts now available that largely fix the problems with the gearbox. Despite the problems I had I would buy another one tomorrow.

However, if you can stretch to a TDV8

Thats exactely what i am thinking!
I did not realise that you can now pick up a TDV8 for under 20k,
twice the power, better spec suspension and the same mpg
Now to find one, with less than 75k on it
