Thought I'd be organised and have a trial fit of my chains on the Sport as off to the Alps soon. These were bought for my old D2 and never actually needed them but are listed to fit the Sport 19's as well as the old 18's.

Owners handbook says front wheels only but clearance between inner wheel and steering arm is too tight I think for chains. They're not LR ones but from Husky.

They fit fine on the rear but I'd rather have them on the steering wheels if I can.

Anyone else 'been there', done that', unlikely I'll need them but you never know!

Thanks, Duncan.

I have similar issues with clearance on the A6.... To the point that there are no Audi approved chains for the wheels/tyre/body that I have.

However, went to someone who really knows about chains and who I used to buy chains from when we lived out there.....

To get the chains on I had to jack the car up to open up the top clearance and them make sure I don't use full lock and make sure that they are as tight as can be (ie put on, drive 250m,tighten, drive 250m tighten and 3rd or 4th time) Then they were fine.

I think if you an get them on then you'll be ok.

Fit to the front... Braking & steering is more important than getting moving.

It IS tight but there should be enough clearance there. FWIW - If I've got just enough space to get a standard set of Thule chains on the front of my 20" rims, you should have more than enough on 19".
