if you were to buy a Disco 3........would you.....

borrow a bit extra to get a HSE or save a few grand (quite a few) by getting a low level spec?
Is the extra spec of the HSE really worth it?
The car will be a keeper, used for long trips mostly (not daily daily, maybe once or twice a week) but generally used for long weekend trips (2-5 hour trips, twice a month) and for towing etc
I've had the very helpful link on the difference in the specifications from an earlier post..........
just trying to work out if it'll be worth the extra K for the HSE?
I think I probably know the answer is yes...........just getting the experts opinion
the other option is the 10k Defender 90 option, but they seem to be a lottery on condition.........

thanks
and I know. I'm not sure what I want everyone to say. I think I want them to say "yes, get the XS or GS and you will NEVER notice the difference, you'd be bored of all that nice stuff that makes it more usable, save yourself 5k"
I think in reality - I know that the HSE is worth the extra as the car is going to stay with me for as long as is humanly possible.........i.e. until the doors and wheels fall off.

HSE, will always command a bit more come resale time.
Plus, the glass roof is a nice touch, the sat nav is also a good off road tool for wheel movement and steering pointing. The Arm rests are worth the cash alone.
Mine is fantastic, and worth every penny. Yes you may have to buy an older and higher miles example to get an HSE, compaired to a lower spec model but it will be worth it.

Be aware, march 06 is the cut off for cheaper tax, £270 vs £460.
Any car at 7 years old and or 105k must have the engine belts done. With proof of it being done.
Avoid 07 model years as there are a few stories of oil pump failure/ crank shaft bearing failure. New engine time if that happens.
Have a look on Disco3.co.uk and use the search function. It will bring up thousands of buying advice threads.
And, what Conian says, that too.
He had better be on overtime to pay for my gearbox and diff oil change.

Do you need the boot space and/or the 7x seats???
If not, for your budget, I'd also be looking at Range Rover Sports...

Mmm. Or not.If not, for your budget, I'd also be looking at Range Rover Sports...

I had one as a courtesy car this week when my FF was in for service.
Very harsh ride, no space, no better interior than a Disco.
Not for me.

I do - one of the reasons I like them over The Sport. I've been putting 2 bikes in the back of my M3 which causes me pain ! If not, for your budget, I'd also be looking at Range Rover Sports...

It's going to be used for the bikes, and tools when towing track/race car

Well only you can really answer this. Is the spec difference worth the cost to you?Is the extra spec of the HSE really worth it?
Do you know what the spec difference actually is?

No lottery at all, in fact with luck you can buy a good one for £3k if you bide your time and look at a few.Quite a different type of car though, a bit like saying should I buy a Jaguar XJ or a Lotus Elise....

Ultimately, it's going to have to be your choice but whatever you go for, make sure it's an auto.
M
Why do you say that? Not saying the auto isn't good, but the manual is faster, more responsive and better on fuel, and based on having driven both, a lot more fun to drive too.M

The Defender 90 dilemma does seem like they are a bit of a lottery. As I said, at the minute i'm in a nice BMW V8. I hired a Defender 110 for 2 weeks to have a proper road test in it. It was brand new, and nice but clearly very different to the Disco.
The thing about the 90 is.......the Land Rover website reckons new they can be had for 21k approx..........(obviously low spec) - but then online they are still floating around 15 years old for 10k........I don't get it really
90's do hold their money very well. The good thing is, you can buy and know that in 3 or 5 years time it'll still be worth quite a bit.
Whereas something like a D3 is unlikely to retain it's value the same.
But yes very very different types of cars, the Defender is a very focused specialist vehicle, designed and built on old school technology. The D3 is massive by comparison and a jack of all trades.
Both brilliant vehicles in their own right, but quite different.
If you want something a bit between the two take a look at these:

About the same size as a Defender 110 (there's a SWB if more of a 90 size is wanted).
But the Jeep runs a 2.8 CRD motor and has similar performance to a TDV6 Disco3. The Jeep won't be quite a luxurious as the Disco, but it's a lot more modern and up to date than the Defender. Yet as the Jeep is still a live axle vehicle, it is supremely capable, in fact it's arguably better than the Defender on or off road.
And don't think I say this lightly, I'm a die hard Land Rover fanatic, I currently own 2 1/2 Land Rovers and have owned several others. My first car was Defender 90. And as a family we have owned in the region of 50+ Land Rover vehicles. My Mum has a Land Rover as does my brother. But it is a bare fact that the Wrangler is a very GOOD vehicle and well worth considering. It has a history and legacy that exceeds that of Land Rover, a bigger world wide following and a very similar company ethos, indeed the first Land Rover was inspired by a Jeep and was even built on a Jeep chassis.

The tax difference is Labour's wonderful idea.
http://www.disco3.co.uk/wiki/Models_%28UK%29
This link shows the UK spec's of standard models of the D3. From base 5 seater to 7 seat HSE.
Ime, i've used the 7 seats about 10 times, but it's nice to have just incase. Plus the boot's massive and with the 2nd row folded down it's a dam good van for carting stuff about.
Get a good one, get a good indy to work on it if needed and don't run them on a shoe string. They ARE expensive to run.
Full tank is £120. Lasts me 400-470 miles. Or 2 weeks driving.
Tyres for good makes are £140 a corner, more for AT tyres which last much better for miles, but take 2-3 mpg off your economy.
They do have their little niggles, but every problem is on Disco3.co.uk with the answer and likely cost to fix.
Mine is a fantastic car, does everything i want, bar get 25mpg..

Mine, bought last August, 97k 3 owners and almost full LR history, belts done and 2 wheel bearings and alternator fitted for me, all for £12k. Hasn't let me down once. Currently on 105k and counting.
Has had, 2 bulbs, front wipers, drop links (£56 for genuine ones, fitted myself) and 5 new tyres. (£920)
I have off road tyres on mine.
Will get the diff and gearbox oil changed next month, both diy jobs, then change the ARB bushes all round and upgrade to RRS brembo front brakes.
