Bonkers idea..............Classic
Discussion
Today had a test drive in a newish RR supercharged, loved the way it went, great, but somehow lost all the charm of my RRC Vogue SE, and every man and his dog seems to have one, so not as unique as what I have. so........... what about using the engine, trans, ruuning gear into my classic, I know will not be cheap, but has it been done before
Why would you want to? You can buy a RRC with a V8 engine, an auto gearbox and air suspension, so why go to all the trouble of buying a complete drivetrain (which will cost an absolute fortune) and then shoe horn it in? Plus you'll have all the complication of making the ECU work without being attached to multiple other in car systems, and due to fundamental suspension differences you'll not be able to utilise any of the suspension features of the modern RR over the classic.
That is a fair point, the car is externally perfect, interior is well a bit too BL for my liking (but that is being addressed) I do have a water lost problem which cant get to the bottom of (have had all tests done but to to avail, no combustion gases in the water, so unlikely head gaskets, liner etc) she has done 120k miles, engine pulls strong still, but would like something a bit more modern under the bonnet (BMW, Audi V8??)
I am second owern the first being a family member, so we are in this for teh long haul so to speak

Someone has stuck a 2.7 TDV6 into a classic, but that left absolutely no room IIRC.
I do believe that a 5.0 V8 Supercharged, 6 Speed Auto, Rear Axle from L322 with locking rear diff, and L322 Air Suspension would make the ultimate Range Rover Classic (if you could even fit the stuff). I could be here a long time saying what I'd do with the interior, too :-)
A lottery win car for sure.

Sorry would not touch diesel with a barge pole, Jaguar makes the 5 litre yes, am guessing and XKR engine could be interesting I do believe that a 5.0 V8 Supercharged, 6 Speed Auto, Rear Axle from L322 with locking rear diff, and L322 Air Suspension would make the ultimate Range Rover Classic (if you could even fit the stuff). By the sounds of things you should go and buy a brand new defender. Retro styling, non BL interior and modern(ish) drivetrain. Probably be cheaper than what you're trying to do too. Stick a cherished plate on it, get it dirty and very few will know the difference.
I find defenders to obvious, RRC is a bit different , can go weeks without seeing another one The chevy conversion to the RRC is NOT EASY - putting the engine in is straightforward as it's dimensions are compact and very similar to the RV8(hence the name 'mighty mouse' for the small block chevy)
A Small block chevy putting out 350 bhp and 360lbs of torque can be bought for £4600 from partsworld performance.
You will then have a car running on carbs rather than injection.
You will then have to buy an adaptor kit from Marks Adaptors in Australia which comes with all you will need to mate the engine to the chassis mounts and the ZF auto gearbox. this costs 1600 pounds by the time import duty and Vat have been paid - expensive but marginally cheaper than having bespoke items made and you know it works.
You will then need to pay for various other items so that the plumbing all works - also dress items etc - budget 1000 pounds.
As far as headers are concerned - you can look around for an old overfinch set and have them repaired, or have a new set made(minimum 600 pounds), or you can buy a set of chevy blazer K5 4X4 headers from real steel and adjust them slightly to fit.
Cost 300 pounds.
Stainless exhaust system will cost about 800 quid.
You will also need to uprate the front suspension to cope with the extra weight of the chevy - 300 tdi engine weighs the same so you can use those springs.
An upgraded radiator and cooling fans are essential - another 700.
You would be well advised to send your gearbox away to ashcroft transmissions to have their stage 2 upgrade - 1100 pounds but well worth it.
As you can see it can all mount up, but having just done it and learnt an awful lot and would happily do it again.

Interesting reading, maybe it is the way forward, decent ecu conversion as well maybeA Small block chevy putting out 350 bhp and 360lbs of torque can be bought for £4600 from partsworld performance.

I've had a 327 and 383 SBC in a Classic, both fun, but now the LS is so affordable I think it would insane to fit a carbed cast iron lump. The LS is just an all round better engine.
Yes - but it don't make a proper detroit rumble and if you put an LS in you have emissions controls......................SBC you don't!!!!!Gassing Station | Land Rover | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
