Defender 300TDi chirping noise
Discussion
Hello,
Trying to resolve this noise I'm getting from the front of my engine. I have changed the water pump and belt tensioner bearing and still have the noise. The noise goes when I take the fan belt off. It also tends to go when the car has been running for about half hour.
When I spin the alternator by hand I get a light brushing noise. Dont really get any noise from from the power steering pump. The case bearing seems to be ok.
Any ideas before I spend £90 on an alternator?
Cheers

The 300 TDi budgie is a classic ! and can get you all wound up changing everything in sight.
Actually, its the belt tensioner that's making the noise! and change the belt too whilst you are at it.
The noise is caused, not by the belt or the bearing, ( as some think), its wear in the radial spring that allows the pulley wheel to turn away from its axis, causing the pulley to be out of line with the belt causing the chirp !!
