I've got a slight problem when changing gears on a '96 manual v8. If driving gently there is no problem, but after accelerating hard in a gear or trying to change down quickly at a junction then I get a grinding/vibrating noise.

Its possibly the synchromesh, because sometimes it won't go in gear unless I lift the clutch in neutral first. However, sometimes the noise starts after the gear is selected and I have the clutch pressed or riding on it, leading me to think it is the clutch release bearing.

Any ideas?

These gearboxes like a gentle touch, even a slight pause between shifts rather than moving a lever in a single rush action. If it's been used and abused over the years then it could well be in need of a revamp.

Check out Ashcroft Tranmissions, there is a load of info on their. Although the cheapest bet might be a 2nd hand box off ebay, although always a risk it won't be great.

Its looking like the bearing, others have suggested checking the prop shaft UJs. Started to rule out the synchromesh, because it does it in all gears and sometimes the noise starts after the gear is selected.

Edit: if it does it in all gears it's unlikely to be synchro related as they would be unlikely to all go at once.
