Trying to remove starter motor from the Disco but cannot get any sort of spanner or socket onto the top nut.It cannot be seen from below or above but I can feel it,actually managed to get 13mm socket on it but then can't get extension or ratchet on socket.

Might help to see what you're doing if you use a mirror. I've got a couple of old wing mirrors & a couple of this type: http://www.tooled-up.com/product/sealey-telescopic... Once you can see what you're doing it makes life a lot easier!

TD5 or V8?
If it's the former there is a way as I did the starter on my Defender. Seem to recall it involves slackening the fuel/oil heat exchanger thingy from its mounts, or maybe as simple as the engine cover?
Are you sure the inability to get a ratchet on the socket isn't caused by the mounting stud protruding through the socket base just enough to stop the square drive going in there?

If its a TD5 I changed mine the other day and its a right pig and to make it more fun Land Rover used a different size nut, think it was 14mm.I used a hop up and could just see down the back of the starter(Defender).Fitted a far superior WOSP starter after the last rebuilt one only lasted 18 months!

The d2 boys club forum has a guide to this iirc with socket/ratchet/extension combo used to get the bolt undone. A PITA job by all accounts. Hope this helps but there's lots of other info on there to keep d2 costs down and ease ongoing repairs.

Seem to recall a really long extention helps.....as in every extention bar you've got, joined together.

Well, did it from underneath in the end, knowing that the top nut is 15mm helps enormously.Used two short extensions plus short 15mm socket plus 3/8 ratchet was exactly right length to just clear starter.Nut was very tight, but whole job took only 35 mins.after sorting out which extensions gave right length. Thanks to everyone who gave advice
