Evening all wavey

Thinking of spending 10-12k on one of these Range Rovers, specifically a TD6.

Research shows that I'll be in the 2003 - 2004 age range.

Wondering of how much they 'actually' cost to run. I know they won't be cheap but any advice from present owners gratefully accepted.

Thanks.

I bought mine back in February, a 2006 TD6.

So far its been great. Cheaper tax (as it's a 55 plate) and about 25 mpg on average. I don't do too many miles a year as I commute by motorbike but if you do a lot it could add up. I traded in a 2.0 TDI A4 quattro against it and I think it costs me about £30 more a month to run so is well worth it in my opinion.

I've got a 2006 petrol, with the Jag engine, which I've had for 2 years now and covered about 25k miles. In that time, it has cost me one service at £400 ish including a couple of extra minor jobs, and recently cost me £500 for two from suspension bags. I put a battery on it the first winter I had it, as they are touchy about having a good battery, so I went for a Bosch at £135. Apart from that, no other costs besides running it. I pay £219 fully comp with business use, tax is painful at £495 as it's a post-watershed car, and I get a reliable 20mpg average, have seen it up to 27 on a very long, steady run (across France). I don't believe the diesel is significantly more economical, don't they do 23-ish?

Drive both before you commit, and check the economy - I tried a diesel and hated it, (noisy, slow) but I love the petrol.

Plenty of threads on here and FullFatRR. If it hasn't been done already, budget £1800 or so for a replacement gearbox. The V8s don't suffer in the same way and are just lovely (apart from sub-20 mpg). TD6 is a slug. £1800 saved on the gearbox plus the fact that a V8 will be cheaper to buy pays for a lot of unleaded (or go LPG).

agree totally - the 4.4 V8 is pretty bullet proof

in real life I get about 15mpg

I've recently bought a 2007 TDV8. Got it in for an oil and filter change and pollen filter change with a free health check at a main dealer for £180 which isn't too bad.

I also note that parts seem to be a lot cheaper than for my previous S6. 20" Nexen tyres can be had for a little over £100 and front Borg and Beck pads and discs can be had for £107 delivered to your door.

If you want more information, get onto the full fat range rover forum.

Thank you for the replies folks, I've had a look at a couple today, and had a mosey about on FFRR.
I prefer the petrol version but was shocked to see that even on LPG £70 only gets about 210 miles...

I traded my LPG V8 for a good 3.6 TDV8 last year. Quick, solid and 30mpg. What's not to like?

If you can stretch to a good one of those, that woud be a better way forward.

Our zero history 150k miles up 2002 V8 FFRR required 2 front suspension airbags, a front diff repair, a lambda sensor, 2 tyres and an annual service. Only cost £6500 to buy though and kepy if for a year.

Mike,
That doesn't sound right to me unless the newer engine uses more LPG than mine(4.2 V8)
I can get about 200 miles on a fill up of 60 litres of lpg so around £38. This does include some petrol but not much, say £10 max so £48. I have never done a long trip on petrol but I'd imagine mid teens.
£70 should take get you a good bit further than that.

Oh, and mine passed an emergency* MOT yesterday afternoon with no advisories!

* Emergency as in, I thought it expired in September, because I originally bought it in the September and thought/assumed it came with 12 months MOT, however I checked yesterday morning and discovered that I had been dodging ANPR for a rather embarrassingly long time!
