Lets say, hypothetically, you had £10k to spend on a rr. General use, probably not garaged, at least to begin with, max 5k a year but to include getting about in very inclement weather (so not a garage queen when it snows or is very wet)

Now "best" covers a multitude of stuff - least unreliable, cheapest to run (ok least expensive to run), depreciation, best to drive, most capable etc etc

So :
Option A is a very nice Classic - probably late model V8 vogue/LSE with air

Option B is a V8 Vogue L322.

Either may be LPG driven, it would depend on the individual vehicle.

So who would choose what?

Wouldn't a D3 be better value for money?

Cheaper to buy if you compare age and mileage.

The L322 will (probably) be a nicer place to sit... But for 5000 miles, I'd be looking at D3.

PS - yes, I have a D3 hehe

If it's not garaged, I'd probably avoid the Classic. Even 'good' ones can degenerate quickly and rot savagely. My LSE is in for major surgery at the moment, and the restorers keep on finding more bits of rust - most recently, in the axles. You might get away with a Classic if it's subjected to regular Waxoyl / Dinitrol treatment, but on balance, I'd go for an L322 V8. There are some really tidy ones around for £10k +/- a bit.

I have a D3 V8 and it's wonderful and if it were the only LR I'd had, I'm sure I'd be very satisfied. Sadly, having come from an L322 V8, it's good but it's no Range Rover.

Sorry, they are finding rust in the axles..... rofl

Sounds like they have you over a barrel.

Curious, but on what basis do you say the D3 is better value for money?

Could just be the diff casings - these go properly rusty.

I've certainly heard of it, but have never seen it myself.

Just going on age/mileage/spec/etc...

Probably just my own perceived perception though...

Had a look at a 322 in a local car lot. Boy is it huge - bigger than my LSE on the outside but not on the inside. Liked the electronic top and bottom tailgates, laughed at the electric headrest adjustment but not really convinced its for me.
I need a px on a really nice LSE I think. Maybe next year, spent too much on cars this year.

Does it need to be an LSE? If you don't need the rear leg room then a regular RR is probably a better bet.

You're probably right, I just like mine. I fear there are going to be very few vaguely decent classics in 10 years time, they just rust too much. I shall keep my eyes open.

Yup, holes in the axle tubes and differential cases, big enough to stick a finger into. I've never seen anything like it, and I had a Rover 820 that I thought was a creative ruster.

After it's finished, I honestly don't know what I'll use it for. The ubiquity of the rust makes me wary of using it in the wet, or on salted roads.

Could have bought a really good TDV8 for the money boxedin
