That's depreciation, not Discovery
Been thinking about a Discovery 4 HSE, but finding myself wondering about the wisdom of buying at this stage in the life cycle. If I were buying new now with a view to selling around 3 or 4 years old, I can't help thinking that depreciation is going to be very painful, as there will be a fresh new Discovery 5 out then, and the annual road tax of around 500 quid will not compare too favourably either.
I therefore found myself wondering if despite the much higher purchase price, and not being quite so suited to my mission, whether a new RRS would actually cost that much more to run over that period, despite the much higher purchase price?
Any thoughts on how the the cost of running these two over that period would compare? or am I being silly and allowing the glitzy newcomer to cloud my judgement here on what I really need as my sensible winter wheels with occasional towing and load moving requirements...

I've been having exactly the same thoughts, so maybe it's not that silly after all!
There's a Discovery 4 facelift (MY14) being unveiled at Frankfurt in a couple of weeks' time to tide the car over until an all-new Discovery 5 in 2016. I can imagine these cars will be very nice and due to being at the end of the model's lifespan, very reliable. I'd be inclined to stay way from an entirely new model for a year or two in case of any issues, so what I think I'm going to do is get a MY14 D4 and swap if for a D5 after it's been out for a couple of years. That RR is still tempting, though!

I have a 3 year old D4 TdV6 which I have used exclusively in The Alps and on the Autobahn between Munich Airport and Austria and all I can say is that it is a fantastic car in all conditions. Fit a set of winter tyres on the thing and there is not a hut in The Alps this thing cannot reach. On the Autobahn it goes to 188 km/h (when the limiter kicks in) and it is a breeze to drive. Depreciation is the least of all Landrover products and it has been faultless. I also have a FFRR but for the price this is the best Landrover product there is.
Hmm, i think the new 2014 model Discovery may just be enough to swing it that way. The reduced CO2's taking the road tax out of the punitive bracket makes a psychological difference if nothing else, and overall I think the Discovery matches my mission more. Will have Low ratio box and rear e-diff lock also, doesn't seem right without them.
Need to look at some test driving and dealer chatting in the next couple of months I think.
What have the recent discount levels been on the Discovery, does anyone know. Is 10per cent a realistic target? Don't see that the facelift should affect that too much more than a maybe a very short term bump.
