Hi there,

thinking about a land rover of some form, but still a way off deciding (still at the autotrader 1 hour a day stage!), but looking at the land rover website I noticed the difference between warranties, which I thought says something about their confidence in their vehicles over 5 years old....

The Land Rover Approved Used Promise

- Land Rover Approved or Select Warranty
- Land Rover Comprehensive Multi Point Inspection
- Land Rover UK and Europe emergency assistance
- Independent History Mileage Check
- Land Rover MOT Test Warranty
- Land Rover Conditional Vehicle Exchange Policy

Land Rover Approved Warranty

A minimum of 12 months unlimited Mileage Warranty for Land Rover's up to 5 years old and up to 75,000 miles on the speedometer at the time of purchase, covering most mechanical electrical components against failure.

Land Rover Select Warranty

For Land Rovers up to 10 years old and with fewer than 100,000 miles on the speedometer, Land Rover Select Warranty provides a minimum 6 months cover for specific mechanical and electrical components for up to 25,000 miles from the date of purchase. Cover can be extended to 12 or 24 months at the time of purchase.

So what I'm wondering is how different are the two?

Is it possible as part of the negotiation to get a Land Rover Approved Warranty as opposed to a Select Warranty on an older vehicle?

Any anecdotal evidence of the select warranty being particularly bad?

I'll probably have a budget of about £30-£35k, torn between an older Range Rover probably TDV6, the Sport, and a much newer Evoque.

Any thoughts over all would be great, but don't really want this to be yet another "Which land rover?" thread!

-oh, bonus points for, is the boot of the Evoque suitable enough space for a dog?

-I'll probably head down to a dealer soon, but wondering where I should be focusing my attention for now...

I have the Approved warranty on my Freelander 2, (car bought 4 weeks ago).

2 weeks ago I noticed that the clutch was slipping. Took it into the nearest LR dealer (not the dealer I bought it from though).
They got the warranty rep to driver the car. He said that, yes the clutch is slipping, but its not slipping enough for them to authorise a repair!

As you might imagine, I'm not impressed! 3&1/2 year old car with 34000 miles on the clock.
Next step is to contact the salesman at the supplying dealer and create merry hell. I may even look at rejecting the car, (might need an independent engineers report for that).

So, as you might imagine, I'm not happy with the LR Approved warranty. It appears that I have to have the clutch fail before they will take any interest. Even then, I suspect they may try the wear and tear get out clause.

Unfortunately, by default, this means that I'm disenfranchised with Land Rover and their products.

I have the select warranty on my 2005 RR. The RR rarely has anything big wrong with it, but so far my warranty has paid for a couple of things - couldn't tell you what without looking it up though. (But I do remember that it paid for a new suspension pump when I saw the "vehicle lifting slowly" message a couple of times, even though the old one wasn't broken.) The Land Rover recovery service is very good though - my ignition barrel jammed one day and they were very quick to come out and fixed it at the roadside, which was nice.

The warranty doesn't seem to cover any of the little niggles that you find with these cars, though. I usually just save up all the little stuff and get it sorted out at once, rather than paying for multiple visits.

As to whether the boot of the Evoque is big enough for a dog - depends on the dog. We've got a GSD pup (well, 11 months old today so getting on a bit now!) and a lurcher, and I think the boot of the Evoque is too small for the two of them. I probably could fit them in, but I'd feel guilty! smile If you have a smaller dog you might well be okay. The problem with the Evoque is the fact that the tailgate slopes instead of being fairly square on as with the FFRR.
