I have 20" Style 11 wheels on my Vogue and the original tyres which seem now to need replacing. I cannot recall what brand is on there at the moment but they have always been soft in the sidewall, so they aren't good at crashing up kerbs and they make already soft handling rather wallowing.

I use the car off road rarely (once or twice a year), driving is mostly urban with the odd longer jaunt on the motorway.

Any recommendations for a god tyre and place to buy please?

Stick with one of the OE fitments, like Pirelli Scorpions...

If you want greater sidewall strength, you need to swap to a 19" rim.

Pirelli Scorpion Zero's are the only choice in a 20" fitment IMO.

Are we saying that Scorpions are the only ones available?

Continental and Pirelli are both OEM. I have Toyo's on currently and like them. They are good in the wet and quiet. Had Pirelli's before and they were fine. Don't really like the Continental's as they wore quickly on the side edges and are noisier.

Stick your tyre size in to an online tyre shop and all the tyre options available to you will appear......

Massive choice available, 255/50x20 standard fit but some customers go 275/45x20 with no problem.

Are you looking summer/winter/all terrain ?

Always happy to help if I can.

General purpose. They are Scorpion zeros on there at the moment and whilst they have always been comfortable they don't seem to handle brilliantly and when I bump up kerbs (as I do often) they seem to compress easily in the side wall.

What difference will I notice running 45s instead of 50s? Any at all?

45s will require an even slower approach right?

Correct........tyres and kerbs don't get on full stop, if that's what you need to do drop down to 19" wheels.

Even had a chap in yesterday on 19" wheels on his D4 with a split alloy from a pot hole.

Sometimes it can't be avoided but it's best to miss out on kerbs and pot holes.

45s are cheaper than 50s though is that correct?

I am not sure I want to replace the Pirellis with more Pirellis, what would you suggest that's good value and ideally a bit stiffer?

Okay, so the options seem to be:

1. Spending a grand for a set of Pirellis.

2. A trusted supplier of mine has a set of Continentals with 7mm on them I can get for £400 fitted.

3. My local LR dealer can do a set of Nexen Roadians for about £500.

Any thoughts?

You'll get better impact protection from the 255/50 than the 275/45 tyre by virtue of the extra 4mm on the sidewall.
Its up to you, but personally I'd stick with OE recommendation. The Nexxen look tempting price wise but suspect you'll get reduced wear and a reduction in overall grip.

My Toyo's were £800 fitted. I was offered Pirelli's for £900 fitted. Mobile fitting. www.tyrefitdirect.co.uk
