Cheap off roader, what would you choose?
Discussion
A mate and i both own Disco3's, both are HSE autos with Duratrac's. Extremely capable but there is always that nag at the back of our minds that they are daily drivers and any damage will be costly.
So, plan is to chuck a grand or so each at a cheap landy to use for off roading use, if it gets a dent or so, then we won't mind.
Budget is throwing up a few choices, i know each has pro's and cons so want to put it out to see what others's think of.
S2 landy, there's a few in the price range, all need some sort of welding, outriggers etc, most are not totally original. Various mix of engines in them. Parts are so cheap they are almost free.
S3 landy, as above really.
D1, cheap, loads of bits for them, plenty have been sorted into off roaders, but rust loves them, plus many are getting pretty tired so many be chasing breakdowns and sorting out issues before its ready to go.
D2, less rusty bar chassis worries, has TC to help out, still has the same level of parts support as the others.
I've ruled out defenders as a cheap one will cost dearly to sort out and RRC are getting rare and feel trashing one for a toy is a bit bad.
I'm favouring a cheap D2, my mate is thinking D1.
I like the idea of TC and being able to drive from sites back home without being deafened etc, plus it can back up as a spare car in case one of the D3's throws a huff. He is rightly worried about electrical issues that may exist with them.
So, what would you have? Bearing in mind it's a cheap toy, not a "one life, live it" stickered and giant wheeled mess of a car so will be a good set of tyres, some basic guards and a service sort of car.

Honestly. I'd get one of these, in fact I did, and wish I'd not sold it.So, plan is to chuck a grand or so each at a cheap landy to use for off roading use, if it gets a dent or so, then we won't mind.

You'll want a lift kit and some mud terrains, but they'll go anywhere a Defender will. The 4.0 litre engine is lovely, they are reasonably peppy, as in will fairly easily outrun a TDV6 Disco3 and are easily as comfy as a D2 inside and handle better.
I'm a huge Landy fan, but bang per buck easily goes to the Jeep in this case.
Remember I'm also an ex Defender 90 owner, ex Range Rover Classic owner, ex Tdi Disco owner and current Series III owner.
I will admit a Series II/III 88 does have that wonderful classic charm. This is fine for shorter distances and fun use. But you might just find something more comfy and capable to be a better bet overall.
Disco 1 & 2's are both good, but unless you want to compete in ALRC trails events, the Jeep is still the better vehicle if you don't mind a lower towing limit and smaller interior.
