After many years of thinking about buying a Defender, the urge is finally biting so hard I am going to have to go ahead and get one.

I like the 90, need 5 or more seats, and am not worried about whether it is a converted Hard Top or original SW.

Having driven a few I know what i am letting myself in for, I will be doing some proper driving in it as well as tootling to the office and back - can't keep on using the expensive stuff forever!

I am no expert on Defenders, I have a man that works for us that can look after it mechanically / bodily but need some guidance on this - http://www.landroversuk.co.uk/defender/Land-Rover-... - it has had 5 owners, the last one has however owned it for 5 years.

It is being converted to 6 seats and having rear windows installed. I have seen copies of all the service history etc. and am ready to go for it, just need a sense check from those of you with a bit more knowledge.

Ok imho it looks extremely expensive for what it is, for that kind of money I would be expecting a genuine county station wagon ( not converted) and probably an Xs spec ( heated part leather seats, AC et etc)

Probably not what you want to hear

Thanks Phib, will keep looking and will call the Freelander Centre about this one.

LRUK are offering me a good deal on the one I had seen, and the replacement clutch / gearbox I thought was a benefit, and it has a heated screen and windows.

I have struggled to find one I like, and they seem to disappear very quickly at the moment. Not sure how much I need it but is it possible to retro fit Aircon if needed?

To be fair AC not a must at all just good for resale.

I have had about 9 defenders now ( have a 50th edition now) all the ones that were modified bar the soft tops were a bit of a challenge to sell on. i.e. vans that I turned into county station wagons

The decent ones do go quickly I am afraid but well worth it if you get a good one, just remember to check bulkhead, foot wells and wiring loom ( on TD5)

Good luck with the hunt, its worth taking the time to get a good one

You will not regret it, just take your time buying so you get the right one for you. I spent 6 months finding my ideal one, and love driving it. I knew about many of the foibles as I drove them in the services years ago and it never fails to make me smile. I ended up with a 90 tdci Puma and it's greeeeaaaaattttt.
