Hi all. The key fob battery on my freelander 2 3.2 petrol is dead. I'm told I'll need to spend about 180 quid to get a replacement fob and reprogram it. Really?? Surely there's a battery in there that can just be changed? I've had a search around but can't find an answer to this. Do the experts here have any thoughts they can offer?

I do long drives all the time ( Lancashire to London) so it's had quite a few long charges. Hmm, looking like I'll be dropping my y-fronts soon as well. Got any lube?

I followed the posts on the FL2 forum to change the battery and it worked a treat.

I split the case and got a mate who's handy with a soldering iron to desolder the old battery and put the new one in.

I had no choice as I only had one key.

Total cost £10.

I tried the home battery replacement and failed.

What followed was my worst experience of service from a well know independent in Cheltenham........

Left with one key I bought a blank/virgin key and my wife got it programmed to the car by the local indy. Whilst waiting at the garage my wife calls me, the service manager wants a word, tells me he has programmed the new key and all is ok but for some reason my original key now does not work! Says its not his fault, insists I asked him to programme the new key only and he has not touched the original key. I argue that whilst he may not have physically touched it the codes obviously differ.

Virgin/Blank LR keys can only be programmed once making my original key now redundant. The manager kindly offers to sell me another new key "it was three years old anyway" he tells me, and will programme it for free! He wants a second chance at my expense!

My wife is stood in their reception now late for an appointment with our 6 months old boy who needs feeding and sleep. For her sake I say fine, he calls me back 10 mins later with an "I told you so" attitude re-itteratring it must have been my original key that was faulty. My wife pays bill, we have paid for two keys and one programming charge.

I never did get around to writing a complaint to TF as life got in the way, but I will never go back or recommend them. If I was stood at the counter it would have played out very differently but for the sake of my wife and boy during a busy day at work I took it on the chin and got on with life.

Sorry to hear such an awful story mate. Really cheeses me off when I hear of such behaviour. Rest assured that I too will neither visit nor recommend them.

Thats the procedure I tried to follow. Unfortunately my soldering was not great and I think damaged the circuit board by overheating.

I do have a spare battery, unused and ready for some-one else to have a go. PANASONIC - VL-2330/HFN is the item with the tags as the above link.

If anybody wants it FOC PM me with your details.
