RRS Real world MPG 3.6 vs 4.2
Discussion
I had the same logic last time I changed from my 4.4 FFRR to a RRS 4.2 SC. I picked up a 4 year old top spec 4.2 with 29k miles on it for £29995 from a dealer a year ago and very pleased with it.
at the time a 3.6 diesel was £5-7kK more used for car with same mileage/age
real world figures from a friend on the 3.6 were avg 23Mpg
2 years previous I had averaged 18mpg on my old 4.4 and another friend has averaged 18mph in his RRS 4.2
Ive now done 20K miles in the last year in my 4.2 and computer is showing avg 18.6
however I dont spend much time at all in town. 95% on A roads or motorway
certainly the pleasure/performance from the 4.2SC car offsets the 7-8mpg saving on the diesel that would have cost more to buy in the first place
i think the decision is more difficult now the 4.4 diesel is dropping price. You can get a real world 30Mpg out of those....

eh? was something wrong with it? I get 280-300miles out of a tank of my 4.2 SC
we are talking RR Sport? nope had 3 x 4.2sc, nope 170 miles was max range.......bogie said:
oh well, thats some difference. Id be taking mine back if it was that bad on fuel. Im doing 400mile round trips in mine every week and can get 300miles out of a tank. Actually 98Ron is a bit better than 95ron, but the increased cost outweighs the extra 20-30miles range
I did take it back....and the CEO of the group gave me his bright orange one...the launch colour, it was worse....we are talking back in 05/06 now....

if I did 100% motorway miles in mine at 60mph im sure I could get it up to 350mile range, but I get bored long before then and end up using the performance

my car is a Dec 2008 4.2 HST. A colleague has a June 2006 car though and he manages 250-280 with mixed use and has done nearly 150K miles in it to date
As always with these things, a lot of the experience is down to luck and if you are one of the few percent of owners that gets a problematic car

hi......I ran a RRS TDV8 3.6 for 12 months and 33k miles....around town 22-23 MPG on run 25-27 MPG. Had 3 x 4.2scs, 4 mpg when cold, 10-13 around town, the big prob with the 4.2sc is the tank range....ie 170 miles
Just do the maths....15mpg is worst case on a run (your 130 miles a day must involve some motorway and A roads), car has a 19 gallon tank.....giving 285 miles max. Personally I think with your long journey you would probably see closer to 17 or 18mpg, as traffic doesn't allow you to use the performance most of the time. For £20k would it be better to buy the lower mileage S/C or a higher mileage TDV8? Both seem to be comfortably within this budget now.
Intended use:
Roughly 6,000 miles per annum but car lives in London. Average journeys require getting out of London and then coming back in. Once out, predominantly motorways or A roads and around 40 mile round trip. Some longer drives thrown in making up around 2,000 miles of that 6k mileage varying from 300 miles to 750 miles.
