freelander 2001 , 1.8 petrol GS.

Hi Guys, Can you help i have just put a replacement engine in my freelander GS 1.8 petrol 2001, and lots of new parts like clutch, fired up the engine runing ok but could not get it in gear and when i did the engine had no power????
When the engine is off it goes into gear no problems??
any ideas??
