I've always had my cars serviced by a main dealer whilst it's under manufactures warranty then gone to an indie after that.

I have a new Defender on order and have started thinking about whether to break this tradition and get it serviced by an indie from day 1

Does anyone have any experience of claiming on the manufacturers warranty post indie service / care? Did you have any problems getting the issues resolved?

From what I read on here, this maybe quite pertinent to a new Defender!

The EU laws on Block Exemption mean that provided the car has been serviced to manufacturers spec, on time & using Genuine (not OE) parts then they have to honour the warranty.

However, you will almost certainly lose all "goodwill" gestures when it comes to anything that may or may not be covered by the warranty & also when the car is out of warranty.

As a guide, my 2007 Disco 3's engine blew up in January due to a suspected oil pump failure and despite it being nearly 7 years old & also 145k miles, they gave a goodwill payment of 50% off the £8k bill for a new LR engine! That was only due to the FLRSH it had.

So, IMHO I would advise all routine services to be done at a Main Dealer (you can easily haggle their prices) along obviously with warranty work and then when out of warranty, do any other work at your Indy but keep the servicing still at Main Dealer until at least 5 years old.

My Elise has been serviced by an Indy since day 1 and the Lotus dealer is more than happy to fix stuff under the warranty. After all Lotus are paying them to do it. They are generally pretty reliable and any I don't see any added value in dealership servicing vs. a more thorough job at a lower price with the Indy.

However my Defender has always been serviced by the Land Rover dealer, just due to the probability of expensive problems and LR's generosity with goodwill contributions outside of the warranty. The dealership are also very efficient when it comes to getting LR customer services to pay for stuff. Our old FL2 needed the entire cooling system to be replaced just outside of warranty at £3K and LR picked up 85% of the bill.

Thanks, I think I will stick with main dealer just in case as it sounds like it has more upside just in case the worse happens.
