I've recently bought a 110 (knowing that the tyres needed replacing) and need some advice - what are the best brands to go for? At a brief glance the choice is overwhelming.. any advice appreciated!

what is fitted at the moment?

Are you planning on changing the size of the tyres?

What tread pattern are you looking for:-

Mud terrain, All terrain, road

The more aggressive the tyre the more noise and potentially greater wear on tarmac.

Irrespective of the above I would look at BF Goodrich, Cooper or General tyres

Thanks for the quick replies - Kumho 235 x 85s fitted at the moment but I'd like to go bigger, and I'm looking for all terrain. I've had a look at BF Goodrich but not the others so I'll check them out now. I've heard that 235 x 85 is the standard fitting for Defenders, would you recommend sticking to this size? Cheers!

It depends what you're trying to achieve.

If it's purely a tyre change, then you're fine sticking with the standard size. They work well in all conditions.

If you want to alter the looks, then you 'may' want something wider or with a more aggressive tread pattern.

If you go wider, you may need wider wheels and you may need to alter the steering bump stops.

Let's assume you want to remain 'standard'.

Your Kuhmo tyres get good reviews. So does the ubiquitous BFG AT. Cooper are excellent. So are Continental. The list goes on. Loads of choice decided, I suspect, by what deal you can find on any given option.

Get yourself a set of 255/85 bf muds. You will need to put these on 16x7 rims although i think you can get away with them on wolf rims too.

he would more than likely need a lift kit for these. 265/75/16 are the largest option under standard suspension. There are people out there saying they can fit 255/85 and 285/75 under standard suspension but id view with suspicion as you may well find out their vehicle isnt completely standard, or they have never been off road and therefore dont know what happens under articulation. YMMV and all that.

On a 110 a 255/85 tyre will fit under standard suspension but you are correct that you will lose some articulation.

Sounds like the choice of brand is slightly irrelevant then, so I just need to decide on size... had a quick look at the BFG you recommended LP670 and I have to say I'm tempted. Would you say it's worth all the extra work/money?

Shouldn't be any extra work on a 110 unless you plan to do heavy off road work. Dont know what rims you have at the minute but anyting less than 6.5" will mean you need new to fit the 255/85, 7" being ideal and if you get the offset right you can improve the turning circle. Benefits are it increases the gearing so motorway driving becomes much nicer and they look good (see below, not mine but gives you an idea.)

I have 7" at the moment so that's ideal. I'll have a look for the best deals on some 255/85 then. Thanks for your advice.

Why do you want to go bigger?

Land Rover have already spent a LOT of money, working out the best sizes of tyre to fit!!

Thanks that looks like a really good deal. If I was sticking to the smaller size, what's everyone's thoughts on remoulds? I saw these http://www.johncraddockltd.co.uk/tyres/remoulds/al... but I don't really know the deal with remoulds?

At 85+VAT I'd be looking at one of the online tyre vendors instead or perhaps even a set of "take offs" from a new landy headed straight to the tuners (quite a lot come up on Defender forums).

The best all round tyre to fit will be a 235/85 16, other sizes may look better.
I'd go BF Goodrich a/ts for every day use and a little green laining, some of the
all terrains that LR now fit new as an option look good as well.
M/Ts look good and are great if you need them but your into serious off-roading to
Notice the difference.
