Hi, im looking to get some tyres for my 110 for the winter and some off roading, and on my hunt i've come across some pretty crazy looking Special Track tyres from Insa Turbo (and pretty cheap too). Anyone know if the brand is any good for the price? I was looking at the ones on here http://www.johncraddockltd.co.uk/tyres/remoulds/

Paddocks is the cheapest place for supply............
If you're gonna be doing a lot of road work on them, get the sahara, i have had them for years and they are an excellent crossover tyre, the special tracks, (which i'm just swapping to) are an extreme mud tyre, noisey as hell on road, but excellent grip in mud....... i don;t think in snow they would be much better over the sahara, and as i say they are better on road......

I have Sahara's on my Series 3. They are superb tyres in mud and fresh snow (they have a bit of slip, so are less likely to snap half-shafts).
On compact snow, they are a little slippery, though due to the big tread blocks. Although, that's just gives more reason to donut and drift the old girl!

I've used them before and they are as good as anything else, and are cheaper being remoulds. I did have a set many years ago where the treads started to delaminate from the carcass - but this was a few years ago and the company may have been on a learning curve. Be aware though that the prices quoted from Paddocks don't include delivery, VAT or VAT on delivery, and then you'll also need to pay £10-£15 per corner for fitting - so £50 tyres soon become £100 tyres. Have a look at Kumho as well - I have an old pattern on my truck and know people who have KL-71s which are brilliant and probably as cheap. Marshall are also exactly the same tyre When I buy my next set of tyres they will be Kumhos.

Run them at lower pressures to put more of the block edges in contact with the surface, compromise but it works.I did a daily 90 mile commute in the recent snowy winter (was it 2009/10?) with no problems. Surface varied from fresh snow through packed, to icy tarmac. As an only tyre fit for a predominantly green laning machine I can't fault them in any of the more typical scenarios most 4x4's are used in.
Also note a joint first with BFG MT's in a magazine tyre test a few years ago.
Our sales of KL71 have dropped off big time even though they are a good mud tyre, I found the performance in the snow was terrible.
Switched to General AT2 and "wow" chalk and cheese you would say, OK the AT2 is not a mud tyre but is superb in the snow and remains our best selling AT ever.
OK horses for courses with different tyre choice but over 35+ years experience selling all makes of tyre and testing gives me a good idea what works and does not work.
End of the day "your car, your money so run with what floats your boat".

Apologies to OP for deviating from the original topic.
Interesting that sales of KL71's have dropped, mine are getting close to requiring replacement, they will probably be OK for this winter.
This leads me to a few questions:
What is the tread depth when new? I'd like to work out the wear rate, I think they have lasted pretty well.
They have worked much much better in all conditions than the remoulds I used to use, I am pretty sure I will buy more of the same but curious how they compare to the new BFG KM2 and other competitors (Cooper, General)?
I use 235/85 R 16 size on 16" x 7" rims and definitely need an MT pattern because we don't get enough snow to worry about performance on it and the car is used for a lot of green laning.

What would you recommend for mainly use in mud? My 90 is used mainly for play days and currently I have the old style Kumhos (which look a bit like the Insa Turbo Dakar tread pattern). It's getting near to time to replace them and I'm thinking of buying a set of 4 on steel Modulars, so I can keep my current ones as spares - they still have good tread but I knackered on today!!
