the other day my 'detailer' was cleaning the car and called me out to look at the stainless tread plate on the drivers side - rust was evident particularly on the 'lettering'

also a 'clear coat/lacquer' was peeling on tread plate?

very, very strange?

spoke to a friend who is an engineer and works daily machining stainless - it can rust due to contamination either by being stored with 'normal' steel or the machine tools being contaminated at a molecular level after being used on 'normal' steel

as LR do not make these parts (probably made in China?) this seems quite possible

took car to main dealer who photographed the step to send to LR - had also to photograph the number plate and mileage on the screen - wtf?

good news - LR have admitted a fault and will replace said step - when available....................?

so if you have steps have a close look

Stainless does not mean it can;t rust

if you want to see some fun rust, combine 304 , 316 and some random none ferrous alloy and expose it to salt water ...

so true

316 seems to be the most popular 'stainless' in cars?

Easiest way to document the case for a warranty claim.
