Hi guys

Looking for some advice here.

The wife and I are looking to upgrade to a bigger car and are deciding between the Range Rover Sport (what I like), Evoque (what she likes) or Vogue.

My question is are there any common problems with any of these cars that may help us decide? Or is any one car far better than the other?

Thanks.

Are you in a Yaris if you think an Evoque is a bigger car?

The easiest option is a Discovery or Discovery Sport that way neither of you get what you want and you are both happy. More spacious cars than their Range Rover comparable cars too!

you really need an extensive test drive in all the cars

I'd say the L405 by I'm biased

what I will say is that I know quite a few Sport owners who wish they had bought the full fat - but that's the 'old' Sport not the current car which I gather is a very different beast?

I fear the Evoque may disappoint with regard to the space inside.
The advice to go for a Discovery is very sound.

Agree with the size comments. I used to have a Focus and then bought an Evoque (not because I needed more space) - the Evoque has less load space than the Focus with either back seats in position or down. Inside space is same or perhaps slightly more IMO. Things have changed and we need some more space now, so looking at either a Disco Sport or a Disco

This is quite a spread of prices you are looking at... Evoque is half the price of the Vogue. How important is price to you?

I actually had a really similar situation, last summer wanted to try out an SUV so bought a Sport for £20k from the local Land Rover dealer. It was a 2007 TDV8 HSE. It was a very good car and I'd recommend it to anyone wanting to do Range Rover on a tight budget, though they are getting a bit long in the tooth now. Since then, we upgraded to the new L405 Vogue SE SDV8. Same premise as the old Sport, just in another league of luxury and comfort of course.

If you want to get maximum bang for your buck it has to be a Sport or Vogue '09 / '10. I think most recommend the Vogue, but the old L322 seating position hurt my neck for whatever reason. Looks, etc is down to you.

If you are not too price sensitive - i.e. you just want the best car - then there is no doubt about it the L405 is in another league to every other model in the line up. The new Sport design is very similar but just cannot compete with the new Vogue, not nearly as special a cabin when you sit in there in my opinion. Also I don't like that the new sport is essentially a big evoque as far as design goes, loses exclusivity.

I really wouldn't go for an Evoque, it's not at all a Range Rover experience, I test drove one and it just felt like a regular car to me. Not very special at all. An old Sport is much better.

All my opinion, go drive a few, best value like I say 09/10 Vogue or Sport. Best car 2013+ L405 Vogue.

Hope that helps a little bit, I am very pleased I bought the new Vogue, it truly is the ultimate, but if I couldn't have afforded to buy one I'd be just fine in my old 2007 Sport - with an extended warranty wink

totally agree with the above but if you go for a L405 get the V8 - the active suspension makes it far better than the V6

I did the complete opposite and although I had extended test drives in both the Full Fat Vogue and the New 2015 RRS I went for the sport. Why - because; it drove way better than the vogue, much tighter on the road, more powerful and new engine (306 BHP compared to around 277 BHP for the vogue), but what took it away was that the RRS had a proper gear stick! What were JLR thinking with that rotary pile of crap in the vogue redface

I could have bought either cars price was not an issue but the sport won for me all hands down. IMHO the only thing I think is better on the vogue is the rear end!

the V8 L405 is 339bhp

I agree about the rotary selector versus a proper gear lever

the interior of the L405 is leagues ahead of the Sport and its a far nicer 'environment'

if you really want performance then the Cayenne Turbo is the car for you - simply stunning

That's interesting to hear, I'd never really understood choosing a Sport over a Vogue other than for price reasons. Can I ask, if you wanted a sporty SUV, how come you didn't go to the Cayenne? Porsche is now a really great sports SUV brand! The one niche they are unmatched in. For me Range Rover was always about being a luxury offroader, that's why I wanted one.

Mine is the SDV8, absolutely plenty quick enough that's for sure. I'll probably swap the car for a new one when there is a facelift, had been considering going for the V6 next time since I rarely use the power and would appreciate the extra mpg & range given the long trips I do with the family at weekends.

I think the rotary selector is kind of quirky and a bit of fun, at first it did annoy me coming from a regular stick selector which you can just throw into position with a satisfying pull, but you definitely get used to it soon enough. Looks wise I think it suits the Vogue interior nicely, but doesn't ever feel as nice to use as a stick selector.

I saw the reviews of Sport vs Vogue before going to buy one, I remember one, I think AutoCar, saying that they are very similar interior and I went there expecting this. How wrong they were! Whilst the style is very similar, the feel in each cabin is a world apart. The Vogue is so much more luxury, I really don't know how or why given that the layout is very similar, but it is in a different league to the Sport for interior ambience and quality.

If you want the ultimate luxury SUV buy the Vogue, if you want the ultimate sporty SUV then buy the Cayenne. Though as the OP seems to want a Range Rover, there is no substitute for the L405!

again completely agree with all you say

unlike many RR owners mine goes offroad about six days per week with my shooting/fishing - its absolutely unbeatable even on 'road tyres'

because of my activities I'm getting Vredstein Wintrac tyres fitted to my 20" wheels for winter use - I run 21" wheels with Pirelli Verde for 'summer' use - when they need replacing I will go for Continental Cross Contact Sports

when I had my L322 I had my 19" wheels fitted with Vrestein Wintracs and my 20" wheels fitted with Continental Cross Contact Sports

I am comparing the 3.0d engine in the vogue compared to that in the new 2015 RRS - the one in my sport is a more powerful engine which kind of makes the v8 diesel seem pointless IMHO.

Here is a comparison for you:

Range Rover L405 4.4 SDV8 diesel - BHP 339 - Torque - 740 - 0 - 60mph - 6.5 seconds

Range Rover Sport L494 2015 - SDV6 Diesel - BHP 306 - Torque - 700 0 - 60mph - 6.8 seconds

Range Rover L405 SDV6 3.0 diesel - BHP 258 Torque - 600 - 0 - 60mph - 7.4 seconds

All specs above are from the current Land Rover website under specifications.

As you see above as a like to like comparison between the L494 Sport and the L405 TDV6 - there is no comparison at all - the new engine blows it away in all departments.

Now to compare that to the V8 - The L405 V8 pumps out 33 BHP more and has 40 more torques and is 0.3 seconds quicker to 60 - it is also way more polluting than the new engine if carbon footprint is your thing. I would consider a vogue if put in the engine from the new L494 Sport. I use my RRS around town most days and the car averages 35mpg around town - on a motorway run I easily get 50mpg and if you don't believe me am more than happy to upload some images for you sometime smile I also hear that Land Rover will soon stop production of the TDV8 as it won't meet the new strict emissions tests/laws.

The sport is way more enjoyable to drive and is more a drivers car if there ever can be such a thing in a SUV. Well that's what TATA wanted to achieve by launching the car so guess we can't argue with that.

I also disagree with the comment about the L405 a nicer place to be as I personally don't find that the case at all. I love the interior of my car (black and beige) and it's a lovely place to be with a stitched leather dashboard etc. Can't see the huge difference you guys seem to think there is.

I owned a 2011 Porsche Cayenne Diesel and sold it after 6 months - I don't understand what all the fuss is about. I always hear people going on about the Cayenne but in my opinion the RRS is a much nicer place to be and is a much nicer drive. Yes hard to believe I know but then I'm the one to have owned both cars so am more than capable of comparing the two smile I have driven the new Macan and that thing just blows away the Evoque - there I would be 100% that Porsche has a better product but I don't personally think that of the Cayenne.

Furthermore - we are all different people and will always have differing opinions but that's what makes manufactures make all these models - if the Vogue is your thing then be it for me it's the RRS all day (until the upgrade that engine) smile The car is my work horse so need a mix of good comfort, fuel economy and performance and it ticks all these boxes....

In fact I love the RRS so much that I have requested an extended test drive in the SVR and may get rid of my Maserati GTS and just use the SVR as a daily driver as that would be well worth it biggrin

- Grand Cherokee from another thread I remember you hated that one hehe

Oh and they also agree albeit they focus more on the price factor but this may be useful to the OP:

All fair points, I do understand why you'd take the Sport V6 over the Cayenne equivalent. Though I think it'd be tough for me to go for a SVR over a Cayenne Turbo, based on reviews of performance, not tried either myself as not interested in that sort of car. The power figures & MPG figures in your V6 do sound a nice combo. If they put the SDV6 into the Vogue I'll probably go for it at upgrade time.

One thing though, I guarantee you, with no trace of a doubt (!) that the Vogue interior is notably more luxury & higher quality to the Sport interior. This should not be a surprise, Land Rover would want this to be the case given the market positioning of the cars anyway. This is non negotiable, personal opinion or not! wink

Yes this was the review I was referring to - I thought it was AutoCar - that had convinced me to go for a Sport pre-test drive, but when I went to the dealership in person, just sitting inside both the models (in various trim spec - including a top spec autobiog sport) the difference in interior quality between the Sport & Vogue made the Vogue a no-brainer for me. I wanted the most luxurious family car I could possibly find, everything else was secondary.

It'll be interesting to see what OP makes of it all!

The OP has a lot to consider biggrin

PS - To my eyes, I still don't think the Vogue interior is that nicer compared to an Autobiography RRS biglaugh

Either way - JLR must be reading these posts and loving it as they make both these cracking motors lol

in truth Land Rover see the UK market as very much second place - overseas orders are their primary business consideration

which is fair enough as overseas market vastly outnumbers the UK market

Oh OK so it is not going out of production now then? But even so don't you think the new TDV6 in the RRS makes more sense all round (BHP/Torque/MPG wise)? It seems the TDV8 wpuld need better figures to make it a worthwhile choice over the TDv6?
