Used Range Rover SE
Discussion
So I'm thinking my next car should be something a bit bonkers (I'm 25 so why not) so my eye has turned to a range rover SE 4.2 litre V8.

What I'm just wondering is should I be steering clear of them or are there anything I should be looking out for? Also what are the service costs like, they really expensive or reasonable?
Sorry for the questions but it's between this or a Z4M.

I have a 2006 4.2l V8. Never mind the servicing, what about the cost of petrol? I get 12-14 miles to the gallon in general driving (in and around the local area), or usually about 23-28 to the gallon on the motorway. My record minimum was 9mpg, maximum 31 mpg.
I don't find servicing to be onerously expensive, but that's because I go to a very good independent who does a great job for a reasonable price. The parts are the potential problem though - nothing seems to be cheap on these things. I don't generally find my car needs much doing to it during services, but I do tend to save up niggly little jobs and get them all done at once.
I can't give you a representative idea of cost per annum because I don't do that many miles in it, but if you're planning on using it as an everyday driver just consider the cost of fuelling the thing before you look at the rest.

At the minute i'd use it as my daily but that's about 20 miles per week so nothing too bad and then the odd 50 mile return trip from Leeds to Sheffield to the parents.
We'd also have a 1.8 civic for any other big journeys so it would more be for around town the odd motorway but i'd also like to take it off road and experience the 4x4 properly.
In terms of servicing are there things that have to be changed at certain serving times? Is there anything major that can go wrong on them or are they a pretty solid thing? What are the dare i say diesels like?
Also are there any good forums about that's worth signing up to? I know with z4's the Z4 forum is the place to go so is there anything similar?

I thought the original alloys were 20" on the SC? I'm on 19" at the moment because I put winter tyres on, but the originals are 20". http://www.autotrader.co.uk/classified/advert/2016...

There are lots of things that can go wrong on them, they have a lot of electronic bits and pieces that are all potentially £££ to fix. It's certainly less hard on tyres and brakes than my old Volvo 850T5 was. I can't honestly remember whether certain things need replacing at certain services, I just hand it over to the bloke who picks it up and pay the bill, then he brings it back again.

Apparently suspension bellows and fuel pumps are regular replacements, I've not replaced a fuel pump in 25000 miles though. I had a problem with parking sensors with mine, it took three goes (two LR, one indie) to fix them properly. (Have a guess who resolved the problem...) Other than that, I can't think of anything too major that's broken in the car since I bought it nearly 4 years ago. There are usually fiddly little things to fix at service time, but nothing that I can remember offhand.
It's a brilliant offroader, definitely worth a try as long as you won't get upset the first time you scuff it. I took mine to Eastnor for a play, excellent fun! I'm not precious about the bodywork though - it's a 10-year-old car, it's bound to have the occasional mark on it.
Have a look at http://www.fullfatrr.com/forum/index.php for more info, they're very helpful on there.
That's at least £2k overpriced even for a dealer sale and the red interior is a very personal thing so may effect future resale.
Wonderful cars though and the 4.2 is a rocket ship.
2007 facelift would be best if your budget allows. Nicer interior and cooled seats.
FF site is a great resource as already mentioned.

I'm sure you are aware that a Range Rover is a very different car to a Z4... for your budget you would be hard pressed to get a better luxury car than a Range Rover. But V8 or otherwise, there is nothing sporty about them. So if you want a relaxing, luxury car then go for a Range Rover. If you want a sporty, fun car then go for the Z4M.
Go for the 2007 MY as stated above. Jag engines, better interior, better spec (Terrain Control for starters) - generally better all round. Fuel economy was improved too although it's still appalling.
Don't think for a minute you'll be hustling one of these around, the SC may be fast in a straight line but it's not something you can throw around corners. That's not what they are about.
That interior is horrific as well, I'd steer well clear. It's overpriced and under-specced too.

I picked up a 2007 4.4 (petrol) Vogue SE with full main dealer history for £10k from a trader. Excellent condition, 3 previous owners, no gaudy tat stuck on it, totally original and more toys than the one in your link.
They are out there, just don't be hasty.
Here's a useful guide on the FFRR site:

I recently bought a SC Jan 07 RR.
£15k but it has LPG fitted with it (cost £3k).
So with LPG just over half petrol, it works out cheaper than the Jaguar STR it replaced.
21.1 pence per mile, the Jag was 23.5 pence per mile.
Comparing the handling of the STR to the RR, yep RR is a big old bus.
But the Jaguar had CATS adjustable suspension and a real sporty ride.
But I have to say the RR is just so comfortable and quiet to drive.
Had to get a new Alternator, which caused a recovery to get home when it failed.
Common failure apparently, in that the red light did not come on! Stupid RR for that!!
Also the LPG had to have some work, as valve lube was leaking and at same time a full service.
Had to remove the SC, so also had those heater pipes replaced at the time.
So had a couple of big bills already, but was expecting them to be honest.
Having LPG the dealers won't touch it now, but they did replace the front brake flexible pipes on a recall.
Hoping to get through a year now without any more big bills!!
