Buying second hand L405
Discussion
Hello all, wonder if you guys could help. I have posted on another Range Rover Forum so apologies if you are reading this twice....
I am currently looking to change my 2012 MY L322 for an 4.4 autobiography L405. I am hoping to get one approximately 6 months old, which I believe would make it a 2016MY although I think some I have looked at are 2015.5MY - is there a significant difference between the two or is it just the 'In-Control' system? Given a choice is MY16 a must have over its predecessor or is it marginal ? The reason I ask is that from memory, when I purchased the last one, the step up to 2012 MY was quite significant and wouldn't want to inadvertently miss out on something.
The other question I have is surrounding the cabin fumes issue I have seen reported on this forum - do all of them suffer from this or is it a case of luck? Seems like if you get one that exhibits this problem it can be a pain to resolve, although sounds like there is now a working fix from LR, is that correct? However, more recent posts suggest the problem is back, in a different form, with the 2016 MY - is this people's experience?
Sorry for the list of questions, any input would be greatly appreciated and any further hints/tips of what to look for would be welcome.

FWIW I wouldn't buy a 6 month old Range Rover. The reason being, six months is about when a lemon will be going on sale having been rejected. Land Rover also retails its off-road experience vehicle through the dealer network, having first replaced the damaged bits. I am not sure at what age, but I'd be surprised if it was longer than 6 months from new.I am currently looking to change my 2012 MY L322 for an 4.4 autobiography L405. Personally I buy new Range Rovers, so I know that I am the first person to enjoy the list of problems with the vehicle.

It depends what's around the corner.New models will be often be turned over quickly but older models might hang around for a little longer...

One of the LR off-road experience instructors once gave me a rundown on how to spot the origin of LR owned vehicles in the network. I cannot recall what he said now, but management cars tend to be in certain colours, Experience cars also in particular colours. He implied that in his opinion Experience cars are best avoided.
Thanks for input, have been caught with an Ex experience car before and after an immense amount of warranty work, I sold it on very quickly - only discovered it was one when I went to bathroom in dealership and saw an advert for the experience on the wall with a picture of my car 😫😂. I do think you can find out though if they are ex experience prior to purchase. Was hoping that here may be ex-demonstrators hitting the market soon with the release of 16 plates....

In Control is a waste of time IMHO - I would not let that influence any buying decisions.
Only value in InControl is the 'Journeys' feature. Somewhat reassuring to see where the dealer, valet, service boys has been with your LR. Outside of that, little value and flaky ime.I have a 14MY L405 4.4 Autobiography and know there are differences for the 16MY. These include being able to use the main heater controls to adjust seat heating and cooling (a bigger benefit than it sounds), clever seating (so the front seats move forward when you power down the rear seats), foot operated tailgate and head-up display as an option. Also the rear view camera is upgraded in resolution and has a washer (again a bigger benefit than it sounds - the lens gets filthy), and the surround camera system is much better (more like a BMW"s if that means anything to you). If I had the option of a 15.5MY or 16MY I would absolutely go for the 16MY all else being equal. I agree with the comments above about the infotainment system - the 16MY upgrade is not much to write home about, and the system overall is markedly worse than my previous 530d. When LR fit their latest - as used on, I believe, the Evoque Convertible - then I suspect some L405 owners will be tempted to upgrade. Good luck with your choice - even with flawed infotainment it is a fabulous car! We have just driven ours down to the Alps, four up with skis on top in complete comfort.

LR Experience vehicles are registered with OU, OE, OY, OV reg prefixes and I'd agree, probably best avoided if my driving is anything to go by...
ALL the JLR company cars start with those letters, so 9 out of 10 are not experience cars.Best way to avoid is not to buy white-most experience cars are white.

Fred's points re the seat heating controllable from the dials, self cleaning rear view camera, and auto moving front seats when rear seats are folded down should not be underestimated! I would certainly pay extra to get a newer car with these features.
For your reference the facelift L405 should be here next year.
