Can somebody help me better understand the child lock function on my RRS L494.
According to the manual the only way of enabling the lock is by pressing the button which is on the drivers side door. There seems to be no manual option that is often found on the rear door by the actual lock mechanism.

Is the above understanding correct? Is there any way to automatically ensure the child lock remains on all the time? I am not likely to remember to press the button every time we travel in the car.

Thanks in advance

Does it have drive away locking for all doors? Set that to on and bobs your uncle.

From reading the manual on TOPiX that appears to be correct, the LED should illuminate and a message should show up on the console. It doesn't say that you need to press it every journey.

I wouldn't rely upon that, on most of my LR vehicles you pull the door pull twice, once unlocks it, the second opens it (this is when locked).
I do normally enable this option on my vehicles though.

Press the button and it will turn on child locks for doors and windows, and they'll stay child-locked until you press the button again
