Hello all, first post here. Recently had a gearbox rebuild (2.7d '06) as car was juddering suggesting a torque converter problem. Got the car back now and is still juddering and been told by the garage who did the work to bring it back in 300 miles and they will reset it?

Does this seem like the correct course of action? I was expecting the car to be as good as new!

Thanks

Did they replace the torque converter?
Or just change the oil?

Apparently a recon gearbox and torque converter with new oil. Not so sure on keep driving it for 300 miles if it doesn't seem any better than before any money exchanged hands!

I would take it back.

A recon box and new torque converter should give a smooth shift and drive.

Been in a couple of D3s with rebuilt boxes and they shift smoothly with no judder.

Gonna get it back in to get sorted (again). Judder is apparent under hard acceleration also now and seems to be getting quite noisy

Was the gearbox and the torque converter replaced or did you just get one of them replaced? Some people do the later to save money, but obviously its a a risky strategy. I'm not criticizing you if you did take the cheaper option. Wouldn't blame you if you did. They are pricey beasts to run frown

There is no way the box should be juddering after a fresh re-build. I would get something in writing to the garage sharpish and make sure you send everything recorded delivery and keep a file of every piece of communication.

Both were replaced on a service exchange basis. Noticed the revs fluctuating between around 1 -1.5k when coasting downhill no acceleration. Would this tie in with the faulty torque converter? Took the car back in today so hopefully will have it back next week

Sometimes that can be solved by an oil change and maybe some Dr. Tranny (Google it). Power flush can also help, but that has its risks.

However, if its a new box and TC, then it shouldn't be doing that at all.

As I said before, be prepared for a battle with which ever company did the work. If you need to sell it, then anyone who knows what to look for on a D3/RRS will recognize the issue with the box and certainly won't pay full price.

However, people do run D3s with iffy boxes for thousands of miles. One hap on the FB group is up to 24k with a bit of juddering!

Had the car in yesterday, and the chap that sent the gearbox has accepted that its faulty due to a bad solenoid. He is going to replace the box next week smile
